inside Israel, including Sunday's attack
on a railway depot in Haifa, killing at
least eight people and wounding more
than a dozen others.
As news reports of the attacks
reached Metro Detroit, people with
loved ones in Israel, including Hannan
Lis of Farmington Hills, touched base
with family members by phone. His
parents, Esther and Yousef Lis, live in
Haifa, Israel's third largest city.

said. "They did for a little bit, but
they're just staying in a room that
faces to the south. Every waking
moment they're watching the news."
Lis, who also has a home in Haifa,
fought as a soldier in Lebanon with
the Israel Defense Forces in the late
1970s. He says most Israelis are con-
vinced the current conflict is neces-
sary.
"We need to crush Hezbollah's fire
as much as we can — to blow their
ambition to become a power," Lis said.
"We're very surprised they've been
able to so easily bomb Haifa and other
places. Right now, there's a feeling that
in spite of this temporary hardship it's
a price that's worth paying. We have
to do away with Hezbollah to prevent
them from being a permanent threat
to Israel."
Haifa native Yossi Benjamin of
Farmington Hills shared many of the
same sentiments. His parents, two sis-

ters, a brother and nine nieces and
nephews live in Israel. Benjamin says
the first rocket the Lebanon-based
militants fired into Haifa landed about
500 feet from his sister's house.
"She was home with the kids':
Benjamin said. "It landed on the side
of the road and just caused damage to
the road and walkway. They left to stay
with my parents in a different part of
the city"
Benjamin, who owns Yossi's Israeli
Restaurant on Orchard Lake Road in
West Bloomfield, is having a tough
time going on with business as usual
here in Michigan knowing his family
and friends may be in harm's way.
"The last few days I'm going to sleep
late or early in the morning, which
is not helping me much because I'm
working very hard:' he said. "But, my
heart is in Israel."
