Miller, a University of Michigan
graduate, was a prominent figure in
American literature for 60 years; he
died last year at 89. He was Monroe's
third and last husband."[Arthur
Miller] wouldn't have married me if I
had been nothing but a dumb blonde':
Monroe once said.
Monroe's last movie, with Clark
Gable, was The Misfits, written by

Miller, who once described his famous
wife: "She knew she could roll into a
party like a grenade and wreck com-
placent couples with a smile, and she
enjoyed this power." ❑

I felt on the inside. I didn't abuse

For The Record

In a previous column, this writer
noted that the lead characters in
the novel The Devil Wears Prada
were Jewish and implied that the
same characters in the now hit
movie of the same name were
Jewish, too.
Unfortunately, I hadn't yet seen
the movie and didn't realize the
filmmakers had engaged in the
common practice of "de-Judaizing"

Reincarnation Of Marilyn?

More than 300 books have been
written about Marilyn Monroe,
and now here comes another one,
released last month to coincide with
what would have been the star's 80th
birthday.
Marilyn Monroe Returns: The
Healing of a Soul (Hampton Roads
Publishing; $22.95) by Dr. Adrian
Finkelstein, a California psychiatrist
on staff at the UCLA Medical School,
isn't primarily about Monroe, howev-
er. It's about a patient Dr. Finkelstein
has treated for six years: Canadian
pop singer Sherrie Lea Laird, 36,
who thinks she's the reincarnation of
Monroe.
Dr. Finkelstein, who received his
early medical training from the
Hadassah Medical School at the
Hebrew University in Israel, presents
the results of videotaped past-life
regressions, in which Laird, under
hypnosis, provides new details about
Monroe's life and inner thoughts,

including her involvement with the
Kennedy brothers, and describes
how she really died. The author gives
evidence of biometric similarities
between Monroe and Laird that will
intrigue even skeptics.
"This woman's story, especially
done under hypnosis, is entirely pos-
sible; I've had many cases that make
me a firm believer in reincarna-
tion," said Dr. Alicia Tisdale of West
Bloomfield, who has been a regres-
sion therapist for 16 of her 28 years
as a clinical psychologist. She sees
several regression patients a week.
"They've ranged from victims of
the Grecian Wars and the Holocaust
to celebrities like Monroe': says
Tisdale. "This therapy under hypno-
sis is very powerful. The patients are
in a relaxed state, and they describe
their experiences in such detail that
proves their reincarnation!'

market. Neither the young Jewish
assistant nor her bully fashion-edi-
tor boss is identified as "anything"
in the movie.
I shouldn't have been surprised.
The ethnic neutering of Jewish
characters has been going on for
decades.
Two examples that spring to
mind: In the movie version of The
Caine Mutiny, the defense attorney
wasn't ethnically or religiously
identified, although anti-Semitism
was a plot point in the original
play. In the real-life memoir Girl
Interrupted, two Jewish teens meet
in a mental institution. In the hit
movie, they have no ethnic identity.
Can you think of another
example(s)? Perhaps one that
annoyed you? Write me at
middleoftheroadl@aol.com , and I
may share the results in a future
column. ❑
