The other four are considered minor fast days, which last from sunrise to sunset on the same day. Shiva Asar be-Tammuz , the 17th of Tammuz, is one of those minor fast days, falling this year on July 13. According to the Mishnah, this was the day the Romans breached the walls around Jerusalem, which led to the destruc- tion three weeks later of the Second Temple in 70 C.E. Jeremiah men- tions that the walls of Jerusalem were breached (preceding destruc- tion of the First Temple in 586 B.C.E.) on the ninth of Tammuz, but this event is commemorated on the 17th of Tammuz. The ancient rabbis mention other events that they believed occurred on this day, including Moses breaking the tablets of the Ten Commandments, cessation of the daily sacrifices during the Roman siege, the burning of the Torah and the building of an idol in the Temple before the Maccabean revolt. for more information/tour, call 6710 West Maple Road • West Mot, iocz;:ierl on the Ei;gece 3(!d Jewish Cornr?,.,iity E'RE PART OF THE TE Furnished & Unfurnished Suites Available jecwish tIorne & Aging Sery ices a service of have the Detroit Jewish News delivered to your door - MyJewishlearning.com every Thursday Essay Winners Sixth-grader Danny Harwood of West Bloomfield and ninth-grader Sarah Rider-Gordon of Oak Park were winners in the essay con- test for youngsters who went on Federation's Family Miracle Mission late last December. Sarah wrote about being in Israel for the first time and how much at home she felt. When she prayed at Rachel's Tomb, she says she felt "like she was sitting in the seat next to me and listening to every prayer of mine:' In Danny's essay, he talked about how at first Israel looked like the United States, but when they started driving, "we saw A LOT of desert and then it looked like the real thing." He was impressed with his visit to the army base. Both winners received a cover table book about Israel and a fam- ily dinner at Jerusalem Pizza in Southfield. The contest was spon- sored by the Jewish Community Council of Metropolitan Detroit and the Jewish News. 248-661"2999 248.351.5171, visit www.JNonline.us call (click the subscribe link) or fill out and mail the form below '1 year@$56 bill me 12 years @$88 !payment enclosed charge my 1_1Visal—IMasterCard exp date card # signature(required) name phone# street address city state zip email address E I would like to be contacted about special offers and/or sending a gift subscription mail to: Detroit Jewish News • PO Box 2267 .
