QUESTIONS

Who's thinking what

"I'm living out my childhood dream," says JEFF LESSON.
If something exciting is happening on the Detroit sports
scene, you can bet Lesson, 45, of West Bloomfield is
somewhere dose to the action. As a sports anchor and
reporter for WWJ-AM radio, thousands of people hear his
reports — including his award-winning feature, "Lesson
on Golf" — every week.
"One of the best things about covering sports in Detroit
is that if one team is not all that hot, there's always
another," says Lesson. The best gig he ever had, he adds,
was anchoring the CBS radio national play-by-play cover-
age of the 2004 Ryder Cup at Oakland Hills Country Club
in Bloomfield Township.
When he's not on the sidelines, in the locker room or
attending press briefings, Lesson is in the courtroom
— he's also a practicing attorney in Southfield, special-
izing in criminal and probate law. "Both jobs are a diver-
sion from reality," he says. We asked Lesson our version
of the Four Questions.

My favorite sports movie was definitely
Field of Dreams, [based on the book Shoeless Joe
by W.P. Kinsella]. For me, that movie was much
more about life and relationships than base-
ball. It really showed how baseball transcends
Americana — whatever that means.
The funny part is that I don't really even like
baseball. But who didn't have a tear in their
eye at the end when the Kevin Costner
character's father returned, and they played a
game of catch?

Moses. Because any guy who can part the Red
Sea could probably show me how to hit a one
iron. The long irons are the toughest clubs
to hit. And nothing short of divine interven-
tion will allow me to hit one properly. I'm also
guessing Moses would be a pretty fast player —
who doesn't hate that five-hour round of golf?

and why?

Matzah ball soup is in my "Book of
Good Things." Why? It just is! Seems like
every family holiday dinner of my life we
have it. It's just something you expect. And
it's best served with lots of pepper. As for
some other traditional dishes, I'm a big lox-
and-bagels guy. Chopped liver? Not so much.

I sang the national anthem at a Red
Wings game. I shouldn't even mention that
the Red Wings hired Karen Newman the
very next day! People are also often surprised
to hear that I'm a lawyer. My attorney friends
always ask me why I still want to practice
law if I'm on radio and TV. Of course, all
my media colleagues ask why I want to be a
sportscaster when I'm a lawyer. The grass is
always greener. ❑
