TASTES

Metro Detroit may
not be Paris, but
we still enjoy din-
ing alfresco when-
ever we get the
chance. And many
local restaurants
now offer outdoor
dining options

COLUMNIST
— wherever they
can find a spot of
sunshine. Here, a gathering of some of
our favorites: Some of the best pizza in
town plus nightly live music and DJs can
be sampled on the deck at Como's (248-
548-5005) in Ferndale, which accommo-
dates 300-plus patrons. • For a casually
elegant experience, check out Assaggi
Mediterranean Bistro (248 - 584 - 3499),
also in Ferndale. East of Woodward,
Royal Oak offers a string of sidewalk
eateries. Soak up the street scene at
an outdoor table at Mr. B's (248-399-
0017), or enjoy curbside margaritas and
tacos across Main Street at Monterrey
Cantina (248-545-1940). Beer aficiona-
dos can head to the Royal Oak Brewery
(248-544-1141) for a variety of hand-
made ales, brewed on site. • Northward,
Birmingham also offers sidewalk cafes,
including Elie's (248-647-2420) on
Pierce Street and 220 (248-645-2150)
on Merrill. Further north, try a patty
melt and sweet-potato fries at the
Paint Creek Tavern (248 - 656 - 2322)
in Rochester. The first post-Prohibition
bar to open in Oakland County, it offers
a family-friendly deck overlooking the
Paint Creek River. • On the west side,
gas lights lend a sultry ambience to the
open-air patio overlooking Union Lake
at It's a Matter ofTaste (248 - 360 - 6650)
in Commerce Township, known for
its Thai-style red-curried walleye and
fishbowls brimming with rum. And
every weekend in July, women can enjoy
cabana-boy service and foot massages
on "Chaise Lounge Sundays." For spe-
cial occasions, Bacco (248-356-6600)
in Southfield offers fine Italian fare on
its outdoor patio. • Head downtown to
Detroit's RiverWalk for scenic water-
front dining and weekly Wednesday

wine tastings (6-8 p.m., through Aug.
30) on the Rattlesnake Club's (313-
567 - 4400) recently renovated patio.

TRENDS
The most discerning fashionistas know
that high style doesn't have to mean
high prices. And with summer weather
so fleeting, many of us don't want to
pay a fortune on warm-season styles.
Target (target.com for stores) pioneered
affordably hip trends by introduc-
ing designer leisurewear by Mossimo
Giannulli and later launching women's
and home lines by Jewish designer Isaac
Mizrahi. The company's latest initia-
tive, Go International, features a lineup
of 90-day limited-edition women's
fashion collections from up and coming
designers worldwide. Go International
began with fresh designs from British
designer Luella Bartley and currently
houses Parisian designer Tara Jarmon's
ultra-feminine line of frilly miniskirts,
Bermuda shorts, sundresses, accessories
and more. After Jarmon completes her
run in August, look for designs from
French label Paul & Joe. • J.C. Penney
(248-348-3190) has pirouetted onto
the cheap-chic bandwagon with a line
from Nicole Miller. Her designer tops,
shrugs, jackets and pants all are available
for less than $50, while certain sale items
like tanks can be snatched up for under
810. • This fall, look for Payless (pay-
less.com for stores) to welcome its first
designer collection, Abaete by Laura
Poretzky. The sophisticated runway line
will consist of four styles: a boot, a flat,
a pump and an evening sandal. • Finally,
Swedish fashion powerhouse H&M
has flung open the doors to its first two
Michigan locations, at the Briarwood
Mall in Ann Arbor (734-761-4666) and
at Lakeside Mall in Sterling Heights
(586-532-8847). With more than 1,100
stores in 22 countries and catering to
trend-savvy men, women and children,
H&M has collaborated with renowned
designers Karl Lagerfeld and Stella
McCartney and will offer a limited-
edition line of men's and women's appar-
el by Viktor & Rolf this November.
