Details such as warming drawers
and icemakers, for example, are corn-
mon requests. Brown advises garden
gourmets to allow for electrical outlets
to power food processors and blenders
to achieve even more efficiency. He also
recommends ample wiring for associated
light fixtures when meal preparation
moves into evening hours.
"Our outdoor kitchen has worked
especially well when we've had cater-
ers coming up with special dishes for
parties," says Ron, who likes to cook
his own steaks and salmon. 'At one
party with an Asian theme, the chefs
could create beef, chicken and lettuce
wraps geared to each guest's preference
because they were so close by the guests,
not hidden in the back somewhere."
The Lipsons stock their outdoor
cupboards with utensils strictly for that
space so that spatulas, tongs and serv-
ing pieces remain within ready reach.
Even when the air starts cooling down
in Michigan, whether at the end of a
summer day or at the beginning of the
autumn season, the Lipsons keep guests
warm with a fire pit near the food-prep
station.
"There's just something special about
the taste of corn on the cob cooked on
an outdoor grill," Zach says. "It's great
to share it with friends." ❑
