by Beach Boys-wan-
nabe band Ronny & the Daytonas,
reached No. 4 on the charts in 1964,
when the California sound of hot rods
and hot waves reached its peak.
In 1964, the closest I got to the surf
in Flint, Mich., was when we pushed a
fat kid into the pool.
But I could hear that why-ee-eye-ine
everywhere.
Pontiac discontinued the GTO in
1973, but brought it back in 2003 for
a three-year run. On a recent sunny
day in the Motor City, I took the 2006
GTO Coupe out for a quick spin, and it
why-ee-eye-ined just fine.
The 6.0 V-8 engine, 400 horses
strong with 400-lb. ft. of torque, goes
from zero to 60 in under five seconds

GT 0 ,

according to the brochure, a point I
readily made apparent to a BMW at
the stoplight on Telegraph and 13 Mile
roads.
I love rear-wheel drive cars — big
engines and squealing rubber.
The GTO has a top speed of 159
m.p.h. and gets 16 m.p.g. in the city, 21
m.p.g. on the highway.
It has a base price of $32,295, but the
car I drove cost $34,295, with a $700
destination charge and $1,300 for the
gas-guzzler tax.
A 200-watt, 10-speaker Blauplunkt
audio system could drown out the
engine sound, but who'd want to?
This car's all about nostalgia — about
hot rods, the California coast and push-
ing fat kids into the pool. 0

Thanks to Art Moran Pontiac, GMC Truck, Mitsubishi in Southfield for the quick spin
in a GTO. Past Cool Runnings reviews can be found at JNonline.us.
