The Jewish community of Detroit is
blessed with many families whose
generosity and vision support our
Jewish schools, social service agen-
cies and cultural institutions.
Last week, the community cele-
brated a rite of passage for the Jewish
Academy of Metropolitan Detroit,
announcing the completion of its
capital campaign with a landmark
gift from Jean and Samuel Frankel.
In the article that covered the story
("Funding The Future," June 22, page
14), I commented on the win-win
situation for the Jewish Community
Center and the dynamic synergy
that would be created with students
and staff of the Academy using the
many community facilities within
the center.
In enumerating the facilities at
the JCC that would be put to excel-
lent use by the school, I inadver-
tently referred to the theater as the
JET Theatre.JET is the name of the
resident Jewish Ensemble Theatre
company that uses the facility. The
correct name of the theater, itself, is
the Aaron DeRoy Theatre, named for
the generosity of the DeRoy family.
As many in our community know,
we owe a debt of gratitude to the
DeRoy Testamentary Fund and
the family, whose name graces not
only the theater at the JCC, but also
numerous educational and cultural
endeavors in our community.

Memories Of Max
Max Gill, former American Society
for Technion East Central regional
director in the Detroit area for nine
years, passed away in Israel on June
20 after a long illness. He will be

missed (see Obituary, page 74).
His association with the Technion-
Israel Institute of Technology in
Haifa was unprecedented. Our 12
trips to Israel always included a day
with Max and Aviva and a discussion
of politics.
During my last trip, Max pulled
together all his strength and we had
a wonderful day. We spent time talk-
ing about Israel, Technion and our
families. Max took us on a tour of
Technion to places very few people
get to see. It was the best day he had
in a long time — and it was his last
good day. I treasure the pictures I
took of Max and Aviva and am grate-
ful that I was there.
Max was not a very large man, but
he was a giant to us. He taught us
songs that his family sang at Pesach.
He was so full of life and had many
stories about Israel's beginnings.
With pride and tears in his eyes, he
would show us monuments with the
names of friends and colleagues who
were killed in the wars.
The Spalter family will hold him
in our thoughts and hearts perma-
nently.

RENO 'cha Don't Know

The Israel Ministry of Tourism boasts that tourists can, on the
same day, snowboard on the Golan Heights and trek through
the barren Negev desert. But why did some Israelis recently
truck snow down from the Golan to the desert?
