BEST OF EVERYTHING
Potpourri
Disa and data and a few things in between.
N
ow here was a charitable event
that could possibly make some
other fundraising shindigs look
like panhandling affairs ... And a true
gourmet dining adventure added much
pleasure to the giving.
The second annual Flavors of Michigan
to benefit the American Liver Foundation
Michigan Chapter highly satisfied around
250 attendees with hard-to-believe head-
shaking that, although only in its second
year, is still somewhat of a secret.
The event was recently held in the
Presidential Ballroom of the Ritz-Carlton
Dearborn, with chairgal Susan Gilson and
her committee (Peggy Goldberg, Janet
Stein, Linda Carver, Arlene Helms, Bonnie
Moonka, Anita Fontana) responsible for
what might easily be among the best yet.
Passed hors d'oeuvres the likes of which
might never or very seldom have been
seen before, prepared by 20 upscale chefs
who donated their services as well as the
evening's food ... The latter was a genius-
stroke, with each chef behind a half-moon
table cooking his or her individual dinners
on portable gas burners.
When the sumptuous passed hors
d'oeuvres and open bar reception hour
ended, table numbers were called and
the chef who would prepare that table's
five-course meal was introduced to its
attendees ... Our table of 12 had Jeremy
Grandon of Jeremy Restaurant and Bar,
Keego Harbor, whose excellent dinner can
be duplicated at his and wife Paula's res-
taurant with two-days' notice.
This was truly a charitable fundraiser,
with Ritz Carlton also contributing its ball-
room along with chefs Robert Wilson and
Andrew Sayes and the food they prepared.

Lefkofsky's with reverence,
when I saw mention of Darbys
and Boesky's in your paragraph
about it.
"As a small boy, we would go
to the Detroit Eastern Farmer's
Market in the fall. I remember
a very interesting place on
the corner, Samuels Brothers
Cafeteria, that sure looked like
it had a lot of 'character' to it.
"But there was a deli in
Livonia that was my favorite and that I
miss to this day, in a shopping plaza on
Seven Mile and Middlebelt, named Ben
and George. I went to this deli whenever I
could as a teen with my parents and later
as a college student on break. I always had
the Jim's Special: pastrami, corned beef,
tole slaw and Russian dressing on rye. It
was out of this world!
"The talented owner, Sammy Lerman,
had bought the deli from the original Ben
and George. He was always present and
would walk among the tables asking his
patrons how everything wass and if they
were enjoying their meal. He seemed a
happy man who was very proud of his
restaurant, and seemed to genuinely care
about his customers. His help were all
long-term employees.
"It was wonderful seeing such an hon-
orable, proud, small-business operator
who loved what he was doing and put
pride and quality into every aspect of his
operation. Not a common type person in
the business world today and certainly
someone worthy of much respect." ...

West Bloomfield and still commanding
