JNF Halts Infighting
Jerusalem/JTA — The Jewish
National Fund's Israeli and U.S.
branches reached an agreement
aimed at ending tensions between
them.
The agreement, finalized Sunday,
"will pave the way to new levels of
cooperation in the coming years,"
according to a statement released
by Keren Kayemet, as the Israeli
branch is known.
Observers said the tensions
stemmed from a belief among
fund officials in Israel that their
American counterparts were
bypassing them on certain projects.
Yehiel Leket, Keren Kayemet's
world chairman, and Ronald
Lauder, president of JNF-USA,
expressed satisfaction with the
understanding. They said they
hoped that from now on the groups
would intensify their joint activi-
ties, especially in the Negev.

Producer Dies At 83
New York/JTA — Hollywood
producer Aaron Spelling died at
age 83. He suffered a stroke June 18
and died June 23 in his Los Angeles
mansion.
Spelling was born in 1923 to
struggling Jewish immigrants in
Texas. The prejudice his family
faced there partly caused young
Aaron to turn to reading, helping
spark his creative career.
He was a prolific producer of hit
television shows, creating popular
series for ABC such as Charlie's
Angels, Mod Squad, Love Boat
and Beverly Hills, 90210.
The Guinness Book of Records
cited Spelling as producing the
most hours of television, with more
than 3,000. He briefly tried acting
before beginning his decades-long
producing career.

Lawmaker Slams Concert
Jerusalem/JTA — An Israeli law-
maker came out against a Depeche
Mode concert scheduled for Tisha
b' Av.
Nissan Slomiansky of the
National Union-National Religious
Party bloc said Tuesday that the
British pop band's planned appear-
ance at Tel Aviv's Hayarkon Party
on Aug. 3, a mourning and fast
day, violates a status quo on public
observance of Jewish festivals.
He called for the concert to be
rescheduled. There was no imme-
diate word from organizers.
