Players' Tribute

B'nai B'rith honors Larry Horn.

'nai B'rith softball players put
down their bats and gloves
briefly on a recent Sunday so
they could honor a fallen teammate and
opponent.
Larry Horn was remembered
during a June 4 ceremony at Drake
Community Sports Park in West
Bloomfield that was attended by mem-
bers of his family. Speakers included
Michigan B'nai B'rith President Steve
Zorn and Athletic Chairman Marty
Melton.
Horn, 44, was an avid B'nai B'rith
athlete for 15-20 years. He was a player
and coach in basketball and softball
and he also bowled.
B'nai B'rith softball was on Horn's
mind May 26, the day he died. He faxed
his player's contract to his manager,
Brad Feldman, less than six hours
before he collapsed after exercising at a
gym in West Bloomfield.
Besides planting trees,in Israel in
Horn's name, B'nai B'rith athletes have
contributed more than $500 to a trust
fund for Horn's daughters, Nikki and
Marisa.
Funeral services for Horn were held
at Dorfman Chapel in Farmington
Hills, but he was buried in Chicago, his
hometown.
A realtor, Horn was elected to the
West Bloomfield Township Board of
Trustees in November 2004, giving the
board a Democratic majority for the
first time in history.

Several Jewish players helped the
Birmingham Groves High School
boys tennis team finish second at
the Division 2 state tournament at
Michigan State University.
Brothers Brad and Brian
Krasnick of Franklin each won two
matches after an opening-round bye
to reach the semifinals of their flights.
That's where they lost to the eventual
champions.
Senior Brad Krasnick defeated Matt

Gutting of Flushing, 6-3, 6-2, and
David Tobin of North Farmington,
6-4, 6-4, before running into James
Tsai of Okemos in the No. 3 singles
semifinals. Tsai won, 6-2, 6-2.
The bitter taste of the loss to
Tsai was sweetened by the victory
over Tobin because Tobin defeated
Krasnick twice earlier in the season.
",( Once I knew I might face David in the
quarterfinals, I really wanted to beat
him," Krasnick said.
Krasnick made it to the state semi-
finals at No. 2 doubles last season.
He said this year's road was tougher.
"There are a lot of good kids at No. 3
singles," he said.
Brian Krasnick and fellow Groves
freshman Jacob Freeman played No.
4 doubles at this season's state tourna-
ment:Krasnick and Freeman survived
a couple of match points before beating
Bloomfield Hills Lahser's C.B. Berry and
Alex Kramer, 6-7 (7-4), 7-6 (7-1), 6-0, in
the second round, and they swept Grand
Rapids Forest Hills Central's Patrick
Morris and Tim Noorthoek, 6-4, 6-1, in
the quarterfinals.
Birmingham Seaholm's Tucker
Blake and Alex Solomon beat
Krasnick and Freeman, 6-0, 6-1, in the
semifinals, and went on to capture the
flight championship. Josh Kazdan
of Groves made it to the No. 4 singles
semifinals before being eliminated.
Groves' No. 2 and No. 3 doubles
teams each lost to an Okemos squad
in the championship match of their
flight. Okemos' Kevin Hagan and
Ben Stilwil defeated Aaron Sklar
and Philip Streeter 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2
doubles, and Rob Brereton and Daniel
Dantus topped Kevin Seidman and
Mark Bejin 7-5, 6-3 at No. 3 doubles.
Michael Simonov and Adam Keller,
Groves' No. 1 doubles team, dropped
its first-round match.
Groves finished second to Okemos
in the team standings for the third
consecutive season. Okemos won with
31 points and Groves had 25.
