nswer: Dear Darlene, Lik-
ing yourself (self-accep-
tance) is vitally important
because, among other things, it al-
lows you the confidence to be your
best in many arenas. However, I
believe it is very important not to
confuse self-acceptance with com-
placency. Merriam-Webster defines
complacency as "self-satisfaction
accompanied by unaware-
ness of actual dangers or
deficiencies."

Shabbat Lights

-1-

Unfortunately, I don't have
nearly the space here to
discuss the many health
risks/controversies posed
by obesity. Suffice it to
say that there is much
credible evidence that
// implicates obesity as an
/ important risk factor in a
number of serious diseases.

The fact that you write me leads
me to believe that you may not
be entirely comfortable with your
weight (perhaps in denial?). Are
you objectively assessing the risks
posed by your obesity? Do you
think you might be confusing
self-acceptance with complacency?
Truly accepting yourself is also
about accepting life's challenges.
Positive change (moving out of
your comfort zone) is good. I call
it - moving your fixed scale." Don't
sell yourself short. You can do it.
