Meet The Maestro
Randall Craig Fleischer, who has
worked with the trio of singers many
times, relates to all the music on the
program but especially the songs from
West Side Story.
"Leonard Bernstein was a hero of
mine says Fleischer, 47, who grew up
in Ohio and conducted at Michigan's
Interlochen Center for the Arts last
summer. "I studied conducting with
Bernstein at Tanglewood and always
have admired his music, career and
whole persona."
Although the maestro travels inter-
nationally to lead classics and pops
concerts, he decided on his career
after conducting musical theater,
a student production of A Funny
Thing Happened on the Way to the
Forum, at Oberlin College. He had
entered the school with the goal of
becoming a music teacher.
"It was such a thrill for me to be at
the center of all that musical activity:'
he says. "I went on to graduate stud-
ies at Indiana University, where I got
master's degrees in both choral and
orchestral conducting."
After private studies in New York,
Fleischer became assistant conductor.
for the National Symphony Orchestra
in Washington, D.C., where he
worked with Mstislav Rostropovich, -
who did the hiring. He went on to
work as music director-conductor
of the Hudson Valley Philharmonic,
Anchorage Symphony and Flagstaff
Symphony.
"I had the honor twice of con-
ducting the Israel Philharmonic,"
he recalls. "We played excerpts from
Fiddler on the Roof It was Jewish
rock 'n' roll with Jewish Russian

rhythms, and I have never heard it so
lively and magnificent."
Fleischer's wife, Heidi Joyce, a musi-
cal theater performer turned standup
comedian, wrote the show Jewish
Music in America, and the two
toured with it around the country. She
sang and narrated, and he played the
piano.
"That show basically is the story of
the contributions of Jewish American
composers and lyricists to American
pop music:' explains Fleischer, who
was a junior cantor in the Ohio temple
his family attended. "My wife and
I also have a little company, Cool
Concerts for Kids, and we go all over
the country doing young people's
programs with different symphony
orchestras."
The conductor, who has a 6-year-
old daughter just beginning her own
musical studies, considers voice and
piano his main musical instruments
but has learned a little violin, cello,
flute, oboe and clarinet to get a sense
of what it is like to play them.
"I have conducted the Detroit
Symphony Orchestra, but this will
be my first time with the Ann Arbor
Symphony," says Fleischer, who is
spending part of the summer writ-
ing a commissioned orchestral piece
that incorporates indigenous Native
American music. "I like doing Bravo
Broadway! because it has musical
theater songs from different eras."

Bravo Broadway! takes the stage
8 p.m. Saturday, June 17, at the
Power Center, 121 Fletcher St., in
Ann Arbor. $24-$48. (734) 764°
