Temple Israel's first-, second-
and third-grade religious
school students read 3,828
Jewish books this year. More
than 250 students participated
in the school's annual read-
ing program, coordinated by
Rachel Kamin, director of the
libraries and media center.
"Exposure to Jewish books,
both in a religious school set-
ting and at home, can help
develop children's Jewish
literacy and Jewish identity,"
Kamin said.
Top readers in first grade
were: Rachel Pesick (129
books), Mitchell Bonin (79
books), Joanna Wasvary (75
books), Max Arlow (54 books),
Amanda Papo (54 books), and
Maya Rosen (51 books). Noah
Past also received a special
award for reading the most
books in his class.
Top readers in second
grade were: Rachel Millman
(240 books), Mitchell Watsky
(65 books), Noa Arlow (64
books), Alexa Levin (63
books), Bradley Silverman (62
books) and Samantha Sandler
(46 books). Riley Olson and
Zachary Stulberg also received
special awards for reading the
most books in their class.
Top readers in third grade
were: Georgia Dutton (125
books), Julia Fertel (117
books), Rebecca Ellenstein
(75 books), Samantha Pesick
(64 books), Steven Yellen (36
books) and Benjamin Mazer
(26 books).
"Experts agree that reading
to children appears to be the
single most important activ-
ity for building the knowledge
and skills needed for reading
success:' Kamin said. "It could
very well be that reading Jewish
books to young children is one
of the most important activi-
ties for building Jewish knowl-
edge and skills needed to live a
successful Jewish life."

First grade top readers include: back row,

Rachel Pesick; front row, Noah Past,
Joanna Wasvary.

Second grade top readers include: back
row, Rachel Millman, Riley Olson, Alexa
