Mary Fisher to speak at Temple Israel
about her life and AIDS advocacy.

Keri Guten Cohen
Story Development Editor

T

his week,'Mary Fisher is
kicking off the 2006 Global
Coalition on Women & AIDS
Tour in her hometown of Detroit. The
daughter of the late Franklin philan-
thropist, diplomat and Israel advocate
Max M. Fisher is an artist, author and
speaker advocating for those, espe-
cially women and girls, who share her
HIV-positive status.
Fisher will zero in on the Jewish
community when she gives a talk
titled, "Who Am I?", at 7:30 Friday,
June 9, at Temple Israel in West
Bloomfield. She'll speak during
Shabbat services in Korman Hall. Her
talk is open to the community.
Recently named a United Nations
AIDS Special Representative, Fisher
and three other HIV-positive women
from other countries will travel to
several U.S. cities to focus attention on
the needs of women and girls living
in the shadow of the disease, which is
rampant in parts of the world.
The face of AIDS is increasingly
young and female. Nearly 50 percent
of those living with HIV worldwide
are women. Three out of four young
people in sub-Saharan Africa living
with HIV are young women and girls.

In the United States, AIDS is now the
leading cause of death for African
American women ages 25-34.
Fisher was diagnosed in the sum-
mer of 1991, and went public seven
months later. In August 1992, she
delivered a landmark speech at the
Republican national convention in
Houston. Fisher's mother, Marjorie,
still lives in Franklin.
While in Detroit, Fisher and the
other women will meet with local
HIV-positive women as well as cor-
porate executives, religious leaders,
professional women and youth.
"We are thrilled to welcome Mary
Fisher to Temple Israel," said Rabbi
Harold Loss. "Since 1992, when she
spoke at the Republican convention,
her focus has been on working to
direct our attention to the AIDS crisis.
Her amazing work in Africa is a reflec-
tion of her devotion to individuals
whose lives are at risk."
The latest U.N. report indicates that
AIDS has claimed 25 million lives,
Rabbi Loss said.
"Mary is a friend and I admire her
greatly:' he said. "I am pleased she has
chosen to spend Shabbat with us and
share her story" ❑
