Detroit At A Glance It's a lot to digest in one sitting, but these survey findings give valuable insight into our Jewish community: Population Size: • 78,000 people live in 30,000 Jewish households, of whom 71,500 are Jewish. Adding an estimated 500 Jews who live in Jewish institutions like apart- ment or assisted living facilities, the Detroit Jewish population is 72,000, or 2 percent of Metro Detroit's population. In 1989, 106,250 people lived in 42,500 Jewish households, of which 96,000 were Jews. The 2000 U.S. Jewish population is 5.2 million, also 2 percent of the national total. • Though ranked as the 21st largest Jewish community, Detroit is ranked fifth in annual charitable giving to Federation. The average household donation to Federation is $1,165, a record high amount. Geographic Profile: • The core area of Jews has expanded. In 1999, the core area included parts of West Bloomfield and Farmington Hills, Bloomfield Hills, Franklin, Southfield and Oak Park - 13 ZIP codes in all. In 2005, the core area expanded into Royal Oak, Commerce Township and Walled Lake - 23 zip codes in all.
