JAMD wins in court but loses on the field.

Alan Hitsky
Associate Editor

F

or the second con-
secutive year, the
Jewish Academy of
Metropolitan Detroit had to go
to court to get a chance on the
diamond.
And for the second straight
year, Oakland County Circuit
Court Judge Rae Lee Chabot
sided with the West Bloomfield-
based Jewish high schoOl. But
the end result was the same: the
JAMD baseball team couldn't
take advantage of its legal vic-
tory and lost in the first round of
the state baseball tournament.
The legal decision was part
of a continuing battle between
JAMD and the Michigan High
School Athletic Association over
athletic events scheduled on
Shabbat. Novi Franklin Road

Christian High School, host for
one of 32 Division 4 district
tournaments, followed MHSAA
rules and scheduled the tourna-
ment games for Saturday, June 3, ,
which was Shabbat and Shavuot.
JAMD Athletic Director
Michael Sandweiss expects
JAMD will have to continue to
go to court during state tour-
nament action "until there is
real clarification" in the central
dispute over scheduling." The
judge affirmed her earlier deci-
sions, Sandweiss said, with the
temporary injunction. Sandweiss
expects a final decision "soon"
from Judge Chabot, but also
expects that the losing side,
either JAMD or the MHSAA, will
appeal her decision.
Judge Chabot's temporary
injunction moved the Franklin
Road Christian district games
from Saturday to Monday, June 5.

But the JAMD Jaguars were
defeated by Southfield Christian
High School, 18-2, in a four-
inning, "mercy rule"-shortened
game. The team played without
five of its six seniors, who were
on a 3 1/2-week trip to Israel.
Adam Horwitz returned early
from the trip to pitch in the
game. He and the team had just
one practice before the tourna-
ment.
If the Jaguars had defeated
Southfield Christian on Monday
and then won the district final
on the same day, JAMD would
have had to go back to court
for another injunction — the
regional tournament is sched-
uled for Saturday, June 10.

Holocaust survivors have
endured much tragedy in their
lives. Many lost their entire fami-
lies and suffered unspeakable
horrors. Miraculously, after the
Holocaust they built new lives
and families in their new home-
lands.
Now, as they are aging, they are
more frail and ill. Many have lost
spouses and face greater issues
of loneliness and isolation. The
