JIBE 2CM RAM 60 June 1 • 2006 M-BCY-0000 t hasn't been the season that the West Bloomfield High School softball team expected, but the Lakers have gotten outstanding lead- ership from tri-captains Michelle Lankowsky and Carolyn Sallen. Both are veteran players whose forte is defense. Senior third baseman K.T. Roshirt is the Lakers' other captain. Lankowsky is a three-year starter at shortstop. Sallen has started in centerfield for two seasons. Veteran coach Stu Bronstein selects West Bloomfield's captains, and he's been pleased with this year's choices. "I look for girls who have solid leader- ship abilities and would be able to work well with me:' said Bronstein, who is completing his 22nd season at the helm. Lankowsky also got the nod to be a captain because of her fierce desire to win. "Michelle isn't a rah-rah type," Bronstein said. "She's quiet, but intense. She hates to make mistakes!' Sallen's work ethic also impressed Bronstein. She spent many hours in the West Bloomfield weight room . during the off-season. "I was honored that Coach Bronstein had so much confidence in me that he named me a captain," Sallen said. "I wish we would have won more games, but I always have fun playing softball and I've loved bonding with the other girls on the team." Despite returning six starters, including the entire infield, West Bloomfield was 7-24 overall and 4-8 in Oakland Activities Association Division II just before the end of the regular season. The Lakers will have one more opportunity to make the spring a suc- cess when they compete in a Division 1 district tournament Saturday at Southfield-Lathrup. They'll face Southfield at noon. A victory would send West Bloomfield to the district championship game, probably against Birmingham Groves. West Bloomfield beat Groves for a district title last year. Lankowsky Sallen Besides Lankowsky and Sallen, there are six other Jewish girls on the Lakers' roster. The list includes fresh- man catcher Sammie Goldberg and -freshman rightfielder Taylor Sher, who are the team's top hitters. Junior Jenna Kerner is West Bloomfield's starting first baseman and junior Stephanie Gooel is a valuable util- ity player. Senior Shelley Rosenberg is a reserve outfielder and senior Jillian Rubin is the no. 2 pitcher. Par For The Course Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood High School senior Sarah Nirenberg will get another shot at the Division 3 girls golf state champi- onship. Nirenberg, who finished second at last year's state tournament, won the May 19 regional at Riverv.iew Highlands, shooting 8-over-par 80 on a cold, rainy, windy day. It was the future Michigan State University golfer's third straight regional title. Cranbrook Kingswood placed third in the regional and qualified as a team for Friday and Saturday's state com- petition at Forest Akers West in East Lansing. Four Peat Coach Barry Brodsky guided the Birmingham Marian High School girls soccer team to its fourth consecutive Catholic League tournament champi- onship. The Mustangs beat Madison Heights Bishop Foley 3-2 on May 20 in sudden-death overtime after relin- quishing a 2-0 second-half lead. Brodsky also led Marian to Division 2 state championships in 2003 and 2004. - ❑ Please send sports news to sports@thejewishnews.com .
