nswer: Dear Jim, very
recently, a panel of spe-
cialists sponsored by the
J._
National Institutes of Health (NIH)
found that, currently, there is not
enough evidence to say that taking
vitamins and minerals in supple-
ment form is a good or bad idea for
the average healthy American.

A,

-4- Dr. J. Michael McGinnis of
the Institute of Medicine,
who led the NIH panel's
review, said that "the data
is insufficient to make
4 a recommendation for
i ) the general population"
and that more rigorous
research was needed.

4

. The NIH panel, however,
/ did conclude that:
• Women of childbearing
age should take folic acid
supplements to prevent spina
bifida and related birth defects;
• Calcium and vitamin D together
protect the bones of postmeno-
pausal women;
• Antioxidants and zinc may slow
the worsening of the blinding
disease called age-related macu-
lar degeneration;
• However, the report stresses that
smokers should avoid taking
beta-carotene supplements due to
a possible increased risk of lung
cancer.

More on supplements next time ...
