emember that old expres-
sion, "No pain, no gain?"
Personal trainer Marni Stone,
41, of Farmington Hills says forget it!
"Exercise doesn't have to be painful, it
can literally be something you enjoy:'
she said.
Soft, gentle exercise is what Stone
is all about. She's the senior fitness
specialist at the Sports Club of West
Bloomfield where she teaches "Cardio
Lite a low-impact workout regimen
she created. The classes, which Stone
teaches twice a week, focus on improv-
ing balance, posture, coordination and
mobility. Cardio Lite is for beginners
and those recovering from illness or
injury. Some students have physical
limitations and are recovering from
bariatric surgery.
"I have a man in my class who's 91
who has been exercising for 50 years,"
said Stone. "In the same class is a
woman in her mid-40s. It appeals to a
wide range of people." .
The classes involve an hour of sim-
ple aerobic moves, light weight work
and flexibility and balance training.
Stone said the classes can be a step-
pingstone for someone who's intimi-
dated by traditional exercise.
Like Marlene Rosen, 62, of West
Bloomfield. She joined the gym deter-
mined to get into better shape, but
didn't know quite where to start.
"I was very lax in exercising;' said
Rosen. "Many people who are baby-
boomers or who haven't exercised for a
long period of time don't know how to
get into it, but she makes it very easy:'
Every Monday, Rosen trains one-
on-one with Stone, then attends the
Cardio Lite class on Tuesdays and
Thursdays with anywhere from six to
20 other people. Rosen has kept up
the routine for the last six months and
says she definitely feels a difference.
"She doesn't give slack to anyone,"
Rosen said. "Marni is very interested
in getting each person motivated to
make this a lifestyle."
In addition to numerous fit-
ness certifications, Stone holds a
master's degree in social work from
the University of Michigan. She has
worked as a psychotherapist, special-
izing in the treatment of eating disor-
ders and body image problems. She •
says her background helps her with a
"whole person" approach to fitness.
