Groner was appointed to the Wayne
County Circuit Court by Gov. Jennifer
Granholm. Prior to that, he had been in
private practice for 18 years.
Potts is in her second term as chief
judge of the Oakland County Circuit
Court. She chairs the criminal Justice
Coordinating Council.

JCCouncil Cites Activist
Judge Hilda R. Gage will receive the
2006 Activist of the Year Award from
the Jewish Community Council of
Metropolitan
Detroit at a special
event in her honor
5:30 p.m. Sunday,
June 11, at the
Jewish Community
Center in West
Bloomfield.
During the
Gage
program, U.S. Sen.
Carl Levin, will
address "New Directions in the War on
Terrorism."
Gage retired from the bench in
January 2006; she was appointed to
the Court of Appeals in 1997, after
serving as a judge and chief judge of
the Oakland County Circuit Court, to
which she was first elected in 1978.
She was the first female president of
the Michigan Judges Association and
the first woman to chair the Michigan

Judicial Tenure Commission. Gage
received the Michigan Women's Hall of
Fame Award.

Beth El War Exhibit

To commemorate Memorial Day, the
Rabbi Leo M. Franklin Archives of
Temple Beth El will exhibit items from
its War Collection, 9 a.m.-noon Sunday,
May 21, in the temple foyer.
Historic artifacts, papers, docu-
ments, photographs, uniforms, and
flags embodying the sacrifices and
contributions of Jewish men and
women of the American Armed Forces
will be displayed. Materials range from
the Native American uprisings of 1763
to the Gulf War.
Among the organizations represented
will be the Jewish War Veterans, the
Civil War Centennial Commission,
the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the
Hebrew Union Veterans Association.
Many of these materials have not been
on public display since their donation
to the archives.

Women In Arts Cited

Jewish women who have excelled
in dance, visual arts and music will
be honored Sunday, June 4, at the
seventh annual Jewish Women in the
Arts Awards ceremony at 2 p.m. in
the Jewish Community Center, West
Bloomfield.
Awardees for 2006 include dancer
Jessica Fogel, artist Linda Soberman
and musicians Helen Kerwin and
Joan Freeman. Gallery owner Florence
Morris and arts patrons Jean Sosin and
Ruth Rattner will be recognized for
their contributions.
In addition to a brief biography of
each honoree, the awards ceremony
will include a performance by the
Carolyn Dorfman Dance Company
of New Jersey. Back for a second year,
the company is led by native Detroiter
Carolyn Dorfman, who received her
early training in Oak Park before com-
pleting her master's degree in dance at
the University of Michigan.
There is no admission charge; res-

The awards committee will host a
reception with the artists following
the performance. The awards com-
mittee includes co-chairs Harriet Berg
and Sylvia Nelson plus Margo Cohen,
Sonia Lipenholtz, Ruth Schnee, Deanna
Sperka and Melba Winer.
