emories of the old
neighborhood never
die — or even fade
away.
Just ask five women who
grew up in the Jewish neigh-
borhood around Dexter and •
Chicago Boulevard in the 1950s.
They were close friends while
students at Durfee Junior High
School and later at Mumford
High School.
They called themselves
the "Buni Hugs" during their
Durfee days and then the
"Delphis" in high school.
After graduation, they were
busy with families but managed

"We had common bonds,
common interests -- old
friends are really your true
friends:' said Esther
(Greenberg) Olson.
She said, "Being friends since
the mid-'50s, these girls have
seen it all together — mar-

deaths, good times and bad
— and yet the friendships
remain!'

group formed what they now
call the Rummikub Girls, and
meet in each other's homes
every other Tuesday.
These aren't high-stakes
Rummikub games — "only
five cents a point:' Olson said.
But they did create specialized
T-shirts for themselves, bear-
ing the name of the club and a
group photo of themselves.
The club was thinned a little
when Marcia Hutnick (later
Davis) married John Tuck and
moved to Sarasota, Fla., six
years ago.
The six remaining in the
Detroit area didn't want any
break in the long-time rela-
tionships so they flew to the
Sunshine state for a reunion
in January, staying at Marcia's
home.
Carol (Kaufman) Kay of
Farmington HillMived in Oak
Park during her school years
but joined the group,as a teen.
She said John Tuck stayed at a
hotel during their visit because
he didn't "want to stay in the
same home with seven women."
Besides Esther and Carol, the
other club members are Sandy
late Irving and
the late Sylvia
Pelavin, the
