Owing to Halachah, Bolotina has two oval mirrors where the faces of Adam

studios of Russian sculptors for more
direct training.
Early projects included a Chernobyl
memorial in Ukraine and a World War
II memorial in Moscow.
Looking for more opportunities,
Bolotina and his wife, Inna, moved
to New Jersey in 1997. They came to
Michigan after his wife found a job in a
pharmaceutical business.
As the couple settled into their new
home, the sculptor established Judaic
Art Studios (www.judaicartstudios.
us) in Northville as the base for his
religious and other art projects. As his
facility is being remodeled, he works
out of his West Bloomfield home.
"I have done works for synagogues,
corporations and individuals',' Bolotina
says. "I have done the bimah and fur-
niture for the Chabad of Fox Chapel
in Pittsburgh; stained glass for the
Chabad Jewish Center of Blue Ash,
Ohio; and sanctuary designs for the
Orthodox religious complex Arzei
Darom in Teaneck, N.J:'
Bolotina says that a commercial
client had him complete a statue of a
drilling machine, reaching 29 feet, for,
a museum in Saudi Arabia. Residential
clients have used him to design mosaic
murals in pools and colorful stained
glass windows.
Bolotina.connected with Rabbi Levi
Shemtov, at the helm of the Friendship
Circle, over the Internet, and a work
relationship and friendship developed.
That connection led to his participa-
tion with the Friendship center, where
he brought hired assistants to place the
tiles on the walls.
The sculptor went on to complete
some smaller projects for the learning
center. He designed wooden furniture
for the lobby and small, three-dimen-
sional forms to be placed next to the
signs designating activity rooms. He
wanted children unable to read to know
what is inside each room by looking at
the pieces he made. The art room, for
example, has a palette near the sign.
Bolotina's connection with the rabbi
led to a very lasting effect. He and his
wife became Orthodox.
"Being observant and studying Torah
has made me understand life better,"
Bolotina says. "Religion has brought
more order into my thoughts and inter-
nal discipline into what I do." I 1
