Nyquist to compete at first
Maccabi games in Australia.

Steve Stein
Special to the Jewish News

S wimmer Rebecca Nyquist
will help make history this
summer. The 2005 Jewish
News Female High School Athlete of
the Year will compete for Team USA
at the inaugural Maccabi Australia
International Games.
More than 700 Jewish athletes ages
18 and older from 14 countries will
be in Sydney
July 2-10.
Most will
compete at
Olympic ven-
ues, another
Maccabi first.
Sydney hosted
the 2000
Olympics.
When they
aren't vying
Nyquist
for medals,
the Maccabi
athletes will be soaking in the ame-
nities at their "Olympic Village," a
4.5-star hotel in Rushcutters Bay, and
participating in cultural activities.
"I'm honored to be selected;' said
Nyquist, 18, who has never traveled
overseas. "It should be a lot of fun."
Nyquist's freshman swimming sea-
son at Princeton University wasn't a
great deal of fun. The backstroke and
butterfly specialist from Bloomfield
Hills was sidelined for a month after
suffering a broken wrist in a fall.
After recovering, Nyquist was swim-
ming well and looking forward to the
Ivy League meet when an uncle died.
She missed the meet for the funeral.
Princeton, an Ivy League women's
swimming power, won its 16th confer-
ence championship. It was especially
sweet because the Tigers had won
five in a row before relinquishing the
crown to Harvard in 2005.
At Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook
Kingswood High School, Nyquist
earned All-American, Academic All-
American and All-State honors dur-
ing her prep career. She represented
Detroit twice at the JCC Maccabi
Games for athletes ages 13-16. She
won multiple gold medals as a 13-

year-old in Richmond, Va., and as a
16-year-old in St. Louis. Her parents
are Dr. Douglas Nyquist and Jo
Ann Allen Nyquist.

Join us for our Grand Opening
now through June 11, 2006.

Not Lion Down
Former University of Wisconsin foot-
ball standout Matt Bernstein is try- •
ing to earn a spot on the Detroit Lions'
roster as an undrafted free agent. A
6-foot-1, 265-pounder, Bernstein was
mostly a blocking fullback in college.
The three-year starter carried the
ball 138 times for 508 yards and five
touchdowns and caught 22 passes for
181 yards during his Wisconsin career.
Bernstein was honored at last
month's National Jewish Sports
Hall of Fame induction ceremonies
in Commack, N.Y. The Scarsdale,
N.Y., native was named the Marty
Glickman Outstanding Jewish
Scholastic Athlete of the Year.

Slippery Slope
Olympic moguls skier and ex-
University of Colorado receiver and
kick returner Jeremy Bloom was
selected by the Philadelphia Eagles in
the fifth round of the NFL draft. The
Eagles took Bloom even though he sat
out his final two seasons at Colorado
after being ruled ineligible by the
NCAA because he accepted endorse-
ments for his skiing career.

Off The Ice
Olympic figure skater Jamie
Silverstein from Bloomfield. Hills.
announced she's taking a break from
competition. She's going back to
Cornell University, where she'll be a
junior this fall. Ryan O'Meara, her ice
dancing partner, is headed home to
Phoenix to be a skating coach.
Silverstein and O'Meara were sur-
prise bronze medalists at the U.S.
championships in January. That fin-
ish earned them a spot in the Turin
Olympics, where they placed 16th of 24.
Five years ago, Silverstein left figure
skating partly because of her struggles
with an eating disorder. Her comeback
made news worldwide. I I
