arch Nirenberg is going to
be a Spartan. The Bloomfield
Hills Cranbrook Kingswood
High golf star has announced she'll join
the Michigan State University women's
team next year.
Michigan State won the recruiting
battle for Nirenberg over the University
of Michigan and several out-of-state
schools. "I wanted to go to a college
where I could get a great education
and face a high level of competition in
Nirenberg said. "Michigan State
provides both."
A 4.2 grade point average student,
Nirenberg has been accepted into
Michigan State's James
Madison College. Many
James Madison grads move
on to law school, and that's
Nirenberg's career goal.
Michigan State also boasts
one of the Midwest's top
women's golf programs.
The Spartans have qualified
Nirenber
for eight consecutive NCAA
regional tournaments and
they've played in the national tourney -
five times in six years.
Nirenberg plans to use her freshman
season in East Lansing as a learning
experience. With only one golfer gradu-
ating from this year's Michigan State
team, Nirenberg will be able to pick the
brains of several veteran players next
year.
Nirenberg wants to wrap up her
Cranbrook Kingswood career in style
this spring. The 17-year-old West
Bloomfield resident is eyeing her third
consecutive Division 3 regional cham-
pionship. She's played in the state tour-
nament the past two seasons, finishing
second last year with 76-72/148.
Earlier this year, Nirenberg placed
second at the talent-filled East Lansing
Invitational and she set a Cranbrook
Kingswood record for nine holes when
she shot 34 at Pontiac Municipal Golf
Course.
A year-round golfer, Nirenberg has
had several wins and top 10 finishes on
the Meijer and PowerBilt junior tours.
She also finished eighth in the 2005
Golf Association of Michigan Girls
Junior Amateur tournament and she
was 72nd of 150 golfers in the 2005
PGA Michigan Women's Open.
Nirenberg became a serious golfer
when she was 13. "That's when I started
to enjoy practicing:' she said."I realized
that golf is a game I could play the rest
of my life, and I really wanted to work
at it:'
She's a long hitter, but she feels she
needs to improve her short game.
Nirenberg is the daughter of Henry
and Pauline Nirenberg. She attended
Scotch Elementary School and
Abbott Middle School before going to
Cranbrook Kingswood.
Ice Time
Sarah Nirenberg's brother, Paul
Nirenberg, was one of four Jewish
players on the Division 3 state champi-
on Cranbrook Kingswood boys hockey
team. He was a sophomore defense-
man.
The other Jewish players were junior
forward-defenseman Zachary
Cohen from Huntington
Woods, junior defenseman
Bennett Schneider from Ft.
Myers, Fla., and sophomore
forward Jake Friedman from
West Bloomfield.
Cranbrook Kingswood
blanked Dearborn Divine Child
and Grand Rapids Catholic
Central by identical 4-0 scores
in the state semifinals and finals.
Hoop Honors
Kenny Goldman Basketball League
players Jared Kohlenberg, 12, of
West Bloomfield, and Logan Smith, 12,
of Walled Lake, won the league's Jason
Love Awards. The boys were honored
for their commitment to be the best
they can be in basketball and life,
sportsmanship, teamwork and team
leadership.
The award is named for a former
longtime league player who died of
kidney disease.
Corry Sumner of West Bloomfield,
who coached four league teams, was
named the Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBAs Coach of
the Year in the Detroit market.
League director Bruce Weinman
said Sumner goes beyond coaching
basketball skills. He also tutors his
players who need help with their aca-
demics.
This is the second consecutive sea-
son that the league boasted the Jr. NBA/
Jr. WNBA Coach of the Year for Detroit.
Southfield residents Jamie Brooks and
Jerome Love shared last year's honor.
League games are played at the Jewish
Community Center in West Bloomfield.
