Bill Carroll
Special to the Jewish News
T
he setting was as Jewish as
a Shabbat dinner and the
speaker, Mark Fields of Ford
Motor Co., is the highest ranking Jewish
executive in the global automotive
industry.
Fields and the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit-hosted Federation
Forum drew 247 people, about three
quarters of them Jewish business
leaders. The event was held on May 3
at the Townsend Hotel in downtown
Birmingham
It's safe to say Fields, 45, wowed most
of the audience with his remarks on
the challenges and opportunities in the
auto industry — although some skep-
tics peppered him with tough questions
after his speech.
Harvey Brode of Farmington Hills
asked if Fields had encountered any
anti-Semitism at Ford. "I have not
experienced one iota of disCrimination','
answered Fields, adding, "I was aware
of the company's history when I applied
for the job.
"I was struck by how inclusive they
are — and we are. We have a strong
interfaith network ... we encourage
diversity. Ford is pragmatic in saying,
if you have the ability — no matter if
you're African-American, white, Jewish,
Christian, Muslim — you will rise;
that's one of the reasons I'm so proud of
the company"
In view of the company founder's
reputation as an anti-Semite, one lun-
cheon attendee whispered: "Old Henry
Ford would turn over in his grave if he
knew a Jew like Mark Fields had such a
high position in the company."
With experience as a "turnaround"
expert during his meteoric rise in his
17 years at Ford, Fields last fall was pro-
moted to executive vice president of the
Dearborn-based company and presi-
dent of the Americas. He's responsible
for the development, manufacture, mar-
keting and sales of Ford, Mercury and
Lincoln vehicles in the United States,
Canada, Mexico and South America.
Fields is spearheading a plan called
the Way Forward, aimed at restructur-
ing the company and returning it to
profitability, a formidable task given to
him by Ford Chairman Bill Ford. "We're
in the midst of highly challenging times
in this Motor City community," Fields
said, "and we at Ford are at the inflec-
tion point, a time that requires drastic
change to be successful in the 21st cen-
