Dear
Barber st
time, you
wrote about
the possible
beneficial ef-
fects of a Mediterranean diet on
Alzheimer's disease. Recently, I
attended a lecture given by health
guru Dr Andrew Weil in Florida,
where he spoke on the potential
health benefits of curcumin. I came
away confused, can you clarify the
subject. Thanks, Rachel.

nswer: Dear Ra-
chel, I'll try. Cur-
cumin is the active
ingredient of the Indian
curry spice, turmeric
(Curczima longa, a.k.a.
tumeric), which is found
in many commercial
curry
powders. Turmeric

is sometimes used to

Curcumin is a polyphenol (a very
potent class of antioxidants, which
you may recall I discussed in my
recent articles about the health
benefits of certain kinds of tea).
Curcumin is believed to have anti-
tumor, antioxidant, anti-amyloid,
and anti-inflammatory properties.

In 2004, a UCLA-Vererans Affairs
study of mice suggested that cur-
cumin might inhibit the accumula-
tion of destructive beta-amyloid in
the brains of Alzheimer's disease
patients, and also break up exist-
ing plaques associated with the
disease. The jury is still out.

Hopefully, this sheds some light/
clarity on curcumin for you.
