- "Bob has had the
ability since he
came to this com-
munity to see the
entire big picture of
what goes on. He's
had great vision
, and he's followed
through. To me,
he's been a friend,
a mentor and a role
model for 17+ years.
Bob, you make us
all proud."

- Jane Sherman, philanthro-
pist and former Fred M. Butzel
Memorial Award winner

"Some of the great moments
with Max Fisher at Fisher meetings,
the last one we had at his home in
October 2004 — he was ill, but he
came down the stairs and he found
his voice, and spoke to us. That to
me was a moment of great achieve-
ment:"

What about with David
Hermelin?
"One of the big moments is where
he and I worked together to come
up with the Millennium Campaign
concept, and I still have the napkin
on which he sketched it. He was not
only a great people person, but he
understood what motivated people,
and how to appeal to their best
qualities and their greatest aspira-
tions.
"We did it at a booth in the
Gallery [restaurant in Bloomfield
Township]. He really saw the poten-
tial of this in the beginning, and I
was fortunate enough to be able to
sit there with him and say, 'David,
what do you think of this idea?'
Then to take the idea around to
major givers and they said it would
never work, but David was sure it
would work, and he was right."

Anything else you want
to add?
"One of the major things facing us
that we have to commit to is the
training of the next generation of
Jewish professionals. Without good
Jewish professionals trained to
meet the challenges of the future,
we won't have good Jewish organi-
zations. So valuing the professional,
paying them properly, training
them, investing in them, making
the role of the Jewish professional,
whether you're in the Jewish press
or you're in a Federation or a foun-
dation or whatever, making it a
job with prestige and with proper
compensation with the proper sup-
port, especially from lay people, is,
I think, one of the critical issues of
the next 50 years." ❑
