Patti Aaron, chair of the Jewish
Community Council-Affirmative
Action Committee, writes taking issue
with IN Columnist George Cantor's
views on the Michigan Civil Rights
Initiative [MCRI] (which seeks to end
race-based and other preferences in
Michigan universities and govern-
ment) ("Facts On Gender Politics:'
May 4, page 6).
Assuming, arguendo, that reason-
able people can differ on the MCRI,
why does the Jewish Community
Council use funds raised through
public solicitation in the Jewish com-
munity to support one side of this
initiative? Is the Jewish community
monolithic in its opposition to the
MCRI? I think not.
Are there vast segments of the
Jewish community that support the
MCRI? I think so.
Is the. MCRI manifestly not in the
interests of Jews and the Jewish corn-
munity? I think not.
Let the Jewish Community Council
cease using public Jewish money to
support its own narrow, liberal politi-
cal views. Instead, it should focus its
efforts on those matters which are
inherently Jewish and which hold
near unanimous support in the Jewish
community.

Support Camp

I read with interest your coverage of
Tamarack Camps and Camp Maas
("Camp Goal:' April 6, page 20; "Camp
Romance," April 13, page 63). Your
descriptions of camp life caused me
to reflect on my experiences as a
Tamarack camper, counselor and now
as a parent.
I have warm and vivid recollec-
tions of my experience at camp and
consider those experiences as having
materially impacted who I am today.
While camp is only a monthlong
experience, in our home it is a year- .
long adventure in that a week does
not go by where our boys don't share a
camp story, experience or recollection.

Camp continues to provide for my
children the growth experience that it
provided for me.
I agree with Shelley Hutton, a
Tamarack vice president, who stated
in the April 6 article, we as a commu-
nity need "to ensure that every child
who wants to attend can attend?' That
is why I am supporting the "Send a
Kid to Tamarack Camp" campaign and
urge others to join me in doing so.

A Spirited March

The weather was perfect; the-
American red, white and blue and
Israel's blue and white filled the
sky; the "Star Spangled Banner" and
"Hatikvah" gave us our marching
orders.
That's how hundreds of us began
our roundtrip Walk for Israel on May
7 from Temple Shir Shalom to Temple
Kol Ami in West Bloomfield led by the
flags of two countries united in the
quest for peace and the battle against
our common enemies.
The generously donated food
and drink nourished us along with
the generous sponsors, among
them synagogues, StandWithUs-
Michigan, the American Israel Public
Affairs Committee and the Zionist
Organization of America, which made
the event happen.
I congratulate Mark Segel for gener-
ating the idea and driving its success
and his team Andre Douville, Linda
Stulberg and Don Cohen for organiz-
ing and implementing the event. I look
forward to next year's Walk for Israel.

Correction

In "Upholding 'Never Again:" (May
4, page 20), the Detroit2Darfur
Coalition included representation from
American Jewish World Service, which
also acted as a partial sponsor in sub-
sidizing individuals to attend the rally
in Washington, D.C.
