A Movie To Forget
After reading JTA writer Torn Tugend's
review, "A Television Spectacular: The
new Ten Commandments is better
than the 1956 epic" (April 6, page 56),
I was expecting to see the Exodus with
fewer cliches and caricature-like char-
acters in the Hallmark ABC-TV movie
shown April 10-11. I'm shocked that he
could mistake archeological scholar-
ship for biblical scholarship.
Both movies erred by omitting
Moses' slow speech before his encoun-
ter with the Burning Bush. Both movies
omitted the pivotal event of Exodus
19 when God's voice is heard by all of
the people, answering the charge that
Moses was hallucinating. That's where
the similarities end.
The 1956 epic opens with a list of the
Jewish scriptures used. The introduc-
tion to the ABC movie merely pointed
out Moses' importance to three reli-
gions. The ABC movie excerpted the
Bible only to the miniscule extent need-
ed to set the stage for a fictionalized
History Channel-style battle chronicle.
The clash with the Amalekites, which
is parenthetical and irrelevant to
receiving the Law, was depicted in
gory detail that overshadowed the Ten
Commandments.
The 1956 epic leaves us with the
message of the Bible's Exodus, which
is that a purified people reached Israel
with a mission to be God's example
to the world and Pharaoh acknowl-
edging the one true God. By purging
most of God's dialogue and detailing
irrelevant violence, ABC trivializes the
Ten Commandments. The message
conveyed by the ABC secularized epic
is that the Jews left a trail of carnage
on their way to the Promised Land, all
orchestrated by an angry and brutal
god -- and that message is anti-Bible
and anti-Semitic.

Facts On Gender Politics
JN Columnist George Cantor's "Reality

reality. His commentary regarding the
Michigan Civil Rights Initiative (MCRI)
reveals a thought process filled with the
kind of misinformation and inflam-
matory stereotyping that spawned the
necessity of civil rights movement (and

affirmative action programs) to begin
with.
Fact: MCRI is an extreme proposal
to amend Michigan's constitution,
funded by a group outside of Michigan
and led by Californian Ward Connerly
who was paid more than $1.1 million
to push anti-affirmative action activi-
ties throughout the country.
Fact: MCRI will NOT end preferenc-
es such as politicians hiring, promoting
and giving contracts to their friends,
and universities giving preferences to
athletes, children of alumni, students
from preferred high schools or from
particular geographic areas.
Fact: If MCRI passes, ALL (publicly
funded) state and local affirmative
action and outreach programs will be
eliminated or in jeopardy. That means:
• Outreach programs to encourage
women and minorities to enter key
fields — such as engineering, law
enforcement and health care — or
simply to attend college;
• Gender-specific programs includ-
ing breast, prostate and cervical cancer
screenings;
• Domestic violence treatment and
prevention programs or after-school
programs such as technology camps
for girls; and
• State and local governments' abil-
ity to decide hiring and contracting
policies in order to better reflect their
constituencies.
Fact: Both Governor Granholm and
gubernatorial candidate Dick DeVos
oppose this proposal, as do virtually
all statewide organizations, including
businesses and labor, religious and
civic groups.
Fact: Affirmative action programs
give qualified individuals equal access
to opportunities. Women and girls ARE
major benefactors of affirmative action,
and major losers if it is eliminated.
