Metro

R

unner Nick Israel didn't
train during March because
of a hip injury. But there.was
no way the Farmington Hills resident
was going to miss participating in his
first Boston Marathon.
Even though he wasn't at his best,
Israel made the
trip to Bearitown
last month for the
110th running of
the world's oldest
marathon. He was
clocked in 3 hours,
30 minutes and 33
Israel
seconds over the
grueling 26 miles
and 385 yards from rural Hopkinton
to Boston, good for 5,285th place.
"I just had to gut it out:' said Israel,
21, who runs in about 40 races a year.
Israel qualified to compete in
Boston with a personal-best 3:06.40
clocking in the 2004 Detroit Free
Press/Flagstar Bank Marathon. That
time beat the 3:10 qualifying cutoff
for his age group (men 18-34) and
was good for two years.
"Running the BostonMarathon was
an amazing experience Israel said.
"There was wall-to-wall people along
the course and everyone there treated
the runners like kings." -
Now that he's had one thrill-of-a-
lifetime running experience, Israel
is ready for another one. He wants to
compete in the International Tiberias
Marathon, the only marathon held
in Israel. The race starts and ends in
Tiberias and takes runners along the
southern banks of the Sea of Galilee.
A 2003 Farmington Harrison High
grad, Israel was a captain of Harrison's
cross country and track teams during
his senior year. Harrison won the 2003
Division 2 state track championship.
The University of Michigan junior
is majoring in Russian and Eastern
European studies. He plans to pursue
a career in law or the military. Israel's
parents are Stuart and Cheryll
Israel. He has one brother, Alex, 25,
who went with him to Boston.

London Champ
U.S. Olympic bronze medalist Deena

.

Kastor was a picture of consistency
when she won the London Marathon
April 23 in a personal-best 2:19.36.
Kastor ran 69:48 each half of the race.
Kastor, 33, sur-
vived a stumble
into a drinks table
near the end of the
race to beat her
former American
record of 2:21.16,
set while finish=
ing third in the
Kastor
2003 London race.
The Californian's
bronze at the 2004 Olympics in Greece
was the first marathon medal won by
an American since Joan Benoit's gold
at the 1984 Los Angeles Games.

Greenberg Award

Hall of Fame shortstop Ozzie Smith
will receive the Hank Greenberg
Memorial Award at the annual
Greenberg Golf Invitational June 12 at
Tam O'Shanter County Club in West
Bloomfield.
The invitational, organized by the
Michigan Jewish. Sports Foundation,
raises money-for several charitable
efforts, including the Hank Greenberg
Oncology Fund at the Barbara Ann
Karmanos Cancer Institute.
Smith's many off-the-field hon-
ors include Major League Baseball's
Roberto Clemente Award for humani-
tarian efforts, the NAACP Image
Award and St. Louis Man of the Year.
He's currently employed as the edu-
cation ambassador for the National
Baseball Hall of Fame, a position cre-
ated for him.
For reservations to play golf in the
invitational and/or attend the din-
ner where Smith will be honored, call
Elayne Wolfson, (248) 788-0921.

NBA Deputy
NBA Entertainment President Adam
Silver was named the league's deputy
commissioner. He'll replace Russ
Granik as the No. 2 man behind NBA
Commissioner David Stern after
Granik steps down at the end of the
season. ❑
