"This is, in fad, the first genocide of
the 21st century, but there is hope: all
of you',' Clooney said, according to an
Associated Press story. "Every one of
you speaking with one voice, every one
of you."
By the time Clooney spoke, the
Detroit group was walking to the
Metro station, on their way to a kosher
pizza dinner at the Rockville, Md.,
Jewish Community Center and a long
bus ride home.
"The highlight was being able to
come as a group with other kids your
age to rally for something you believe
in," said JAIvID student Hannah Rosen,
16, of West Bloomfield, who came with
her'mother, Cindy.
Student Elliott Perlman found some
hope from the rally.
"I don't know what's going to hap-
pen, but at least the government knows
there are people out there who won't
take rhetoric, they want action:' said
Perlman of Farmington Hills. "It boils
down to oil. It's probably the core of
the problem: If we treat this with kid
gloves because we're afraid of further
alienating the oil producing nations,
it's tragic.. But unless this country does
something about the energy situa-
tion, we're going to have to pull our
punches."
The rally raised awareness, but
the news remained bleak in Darfur:
another day passed, and another round
of negotiations failed. 17
