Neo-Nazi rally in Lansing turns
out mostly peaceful.

. hen members of the
National Socialist
Movement mounted
the steps of the Capitol shortly before
2:30 p.m. Saturday, several hundred
counter-protesters were waiting for-
them.
And when the neo-Nazis, many of
them dressed in brown shirt uniforms
with swastika armbands, began to
chant "Sieg Heil," that crowd respond-
ed with shouts of "Go home" and a few
choice expletives.
The rally, which has sent waves of
concern through the community for
the past several weeks, turned out to
be a mostly peaceful event.
The 75 neo-Nazis and more than
800 protesters gathered - at the Capitol
baited one another from opposite
sides of a chain-link fence.
Michigan's regional Anti-
Defamation League director Betsy
Kellman said she thought the atten-
tion was unnecessary.
"I hate to give them the satisfaction
of attention': said Kellman, whose
office discouraged dozens of callers

from attending any counter-rally.
"Their hate-filled rhetoric has no ,
place in civil society; their outrageous
preening and 'Heil Hitler's' are an
affront to Jews, African Americans,
immigrants and every peaceful
minority in this state. As a civilized
society, we give them the right to
speak, but we don't have to guarantee
them an audience to hear their viru-
lent hate speech!'
Minor scuffles led to 16 arrests. But
the more than 500 police officers who
lined the downtown streets managed
to keep disturbances to a minimum.
"I am very proud of our citizens:'
Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero said.
"The Nazis sought to diyide us, but
they united us like never before!"
Bernero spent the afternoon at a
diversity rally at Eastern High School,
which attracted about 800 people for
free food, door prizes and various cul-
tural performances.
He said it was so successful that he
might consider making it an annual
event.
