JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL

Mosaic from page 45

Live and Become

T

he blockbuster film of
the eighth annual Lenore
Marwil Jewish Film
Festival, Live and Become, is
the work of Radu Mihaileanu,
a French director of Romanian
Jewish descent.
Perlasca, about an Italian who

saved the lives of several thousand
Jews in 1944 Budapest, was origi-
nally made for Italian television.
Shalom, a haunting gem of
only six minutes, is a British
import; Rosehill, a look at child-
hood in the midst of revolution,
was made by Hungarian Mari

Cantu.
"This year, we had the best
and most international selection
of films ever',' said Nancy Glass
Kanat of West Bloomfield, chair of
the festival's steering committee.
"They say Jews are the People of
the Book'; today, even more than

ever, we are the People of the
Film.'"
-
Among the selections in
the festival's 69 screenings of
42 different films are offer-
ings from Mexico, Morocco,
Uganda and Australia, as
well as Israel and the United
States.
A program of the Jewish
Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit, the
2006 Lenore Marwil Jewish
Film Festival takes place April
30-May 11 at four sites in
Michigan and one in Canada.
Crossing into Windsor, Ont.,
makes the festival international
not only in the scope of its
movies but also in its venues.
"We are the only international
Jewish film festival in the
world," Glass Kanat said.
In all, the event will
feature 31 screenings at
the United Artists Commerce
14, the event's anchor the-
ater. Thirteen screenings are
scheduled for the Michigan
Theater in Ann ArbOr; nine
at the Palladium Theatres
in Birmingham; nine at
the Cineplex Odeon in

Windsor; and seven at the Flint
Art Institute.
"In 2003, our films were seen
by 15,000 viewers',' Glass Kanat
