Call To Awareness

Having had the opportunity to hear
the eloquent words of Nonie Darwish
and upon observation of the import
of her message ("A Call To Awareness:'
April 13, page 5), I must admit that I
find the Detroit Jewish community to
be either incredibly naive or simply
unobservant to what is occurring
around them.
There are organized groups located
right in Dedrborn whose sole purpose
is to spread anti-Israel and anti-
Semitic propaganda. Yet, the majority
of the Detroit Jewish community acts
as if there is nothing wrong.
It should not be the responsibility
of an Egyptian-born woman to expose
what is occurring in our own back
yard. It should be the responsibility of
the Detroit Jewish community to rise
up in an organized fashion and take
on those elements that find comfort
and solace in spreading their message
of hate. We cannot expect others to be
responsible for our welfare; that must
be our burden to shoulder.

Olam, Israel and informal Hebrew
education, Tavor provides a positive,
inclusive environment that empowers
and engages the campers and keeps .
them returning enthusiastically year
after year. The skills and commitment
taught at Tavor have inspired and
shaped many Jewish leaders in Detroit
and around the country.
This year there will be a Tavor
reunion at the camp June 9-11. Alumni
from six decades will gather for a
weekend of Israeli songs and dances,
Shabbat observance, and many memo-
rable camp experiences. Detroit alumni
who want information about the
reunion should contact Danny Kanter
at kanter18@comcast.net .

Your article incorrectly indicated
there is only one Jewish nonprofit
overnight camp in Michigan ("Camp
Goal: April 6, page 20).
For 50 years, many families in the
Detroit area have been sending their
kids to Habonim Camp Tavor, about
20 miles south of Kalamazoo
(www.camptavor.com ). I attended in
the 1960s and my kids went there in
the '80s and '90s. The IN hada cover
page article about three Detroiters
from Camp Tavor participating in
Habonim's nine-month Workshop pro-
gram in Irael (Nov. 24, 2005, page 35).
One of seven Habonim camps in
North America associated with the
World Labor Zionist Movement,
Tavor is a kibbutz-inspired Jewish
non-profit overnight camp for kids in
fourth grade through high school from
throughout the Midwest.
With its emphasis on Tikkun
