Diamond Dandies There are two Jewish players on the Boston Red Sox roster, and both are making big news in Beantown. Kevin Youkalis, 27, the Red Sox's new starting first baseman, was bat- ting .318 with eight RBI as of April 18. The 6-foot-1, 220-pound Cincinnati native was a two-time All-American baseball player at the University of Cincinnati. Centerfielder Adam Stern, 26, was hitting just .188 as of April 18, but his spectacular diving catch saved Boston's 7-4 win over Tampa Bay the day before. "I snowconed the ball',' Stern told MLB.com reporter Ian Browne. "Thank goodness I caught it. If I missed it, it's going to the wall and I've got some questions to answer." - Stern was born in London, Ont. The 5-11, 180-pounder was a standout on the diamond and in the classroom at the University of Nebraska, earning first team Academic All-Big 12 honors in 2001. Play Ball! The 35th season of B'nai B'rith softball begins May 7 at Drake Community Sports Park in West Bloomfield. Even though opening day is just around the corner, there's room for more players and teams.
