To Life!

Dear
Barb, e
improved my
eating habits
at home, but I
tend to resort to
my old, harmful habits when I eat
out. Please help! Thanks, Frieda.

A

nswer: Dear Frieda, As
with any important life-
style/behavioral change,
long-term success has its roots in
commitment and planning.

Here are a few practical steps you
can take when eating out:

1. Go to restaurants that will
.
honor your reasonable food
__,;,, requests (most will). This
will avoid "food fights" in
restaurants that aren't wor-
thy of your patronage.
2. When appropriate,
,) call ahead and give the
restaurant a heads-up
on any unique food
requests that you may
have.
3. At the restaurant, let
your server know (in a
nice, but firm way) that
your food requests are important
to you. If appropriate, explain any
health concerns that underlie youi
request(s).
4. Frequent restaurants that have
knowledgeable chefs. This is the
best way to ensure that your expec-
tations will be consistently met.
5. Traveling/eating out of the coun-
try? Put your special food requests
on a card (translated, of course,
into the host country's langua g e).
