They said they are the only party that would close U.S. borders to • illegal immigrants and that they would present candidates for politi- cal office in 2008. They vilified Jews, communists and internationalfsts and the coun- ter-protesters as well. "This spoiled minority, this brainwashed minority, is not America," spokesman Bill White said about the counter-protesters. "They're a militant terrorist organi- zation and their hangers-on!" As the neo-Nazis spoke, several hundred counter-protesters, who had stayed outside the closed-off section, beat on drums and shout- ed to drown out their words. Punches Thrown Supporters of the neo-Nazi group, which is based in Minneapolis, were hard to find on the public side of the chain-link fence, though perhaps a dozen came out. In some cases, they came under attack from counter-protesters. When the Nazi supporters left their designated area inside the fence, people in the crowd rushed them — with some getting in punches. Police had to rescue several people. "He is racist scum, and we kicked his butt so he would have to leave," one member of the crowd, who declined to give his name, said after he and others had chased a neo-Nazi supporter. Vaughn Martin and Sam Gendi, of London, Ontario, were in Lansing to check out Michigan State University, where Martin will play football next year. They got sidetracked into the crowd of counter-protesters and watched in disbelief as the neo- Nazis spoke. "Do they not know that America fought Germany in World War II?" Gendi asked. "Did they not get the memo?" Martin was similarly disturbed. "This is messed up:' he said. "This stuff shouldn't even exist right now," he said. "This country is what it is because of everybody." ❑ (Jewish News staff writer Harry Kirsbaum and State Journal staff writer Nicole Geary contributed to this story.)
