ax Olender joined Cub
Scouts as a Webelo in
fourth grade at Detroit
Country Day School and knew he
liked it immediately. He enjoyed
the activities, the friends and the
learning required to earn pins and
badges. After earning Cub Scout's
highest award, the Arrow of Light, he
bridged over to become a Boy Scout.
When his father, Allen, helped estab-
lish a Scout troop at Adat Shalom
Synagogue, where the family belongs,
Max was one of the first members of
Troop 364. Since then he's assumed
many leadership roles, participated
in opportunities for exploration and
achievement, attended Scout summer
camp — and, on March 12 at Adat
Shalom, was conferred the rank of
Eagle Scout, the highest achievement
in Scouting.

Isn't 13 pretty young to
become an Eagle Scout?

"Very unusual. Usually Eagle Scouts
are 16 or 17.1 went to one Eagle Court
of Honor for a friend a little older than
me. That really motivated me. My par-
ents didn't push me, but nudged rhe -
a bit after I decided. They've driven
me to all these places and let me go
to summer camp, and have been very,
very supportive!"

What was your Eagle Scout
project?

"It's an outdoor classroom with
amphitheater on a grassy slope out-
side Adat Shalom. It has a chalkboard,
fire pit, benches and a barbecue
grill. I came up with a plan and put
it into action. I found the benches,
the cement, figured out how deep
we needed to dig, then built it. I had
to get permission from everybody. I
invited family and fellow Scouts from
