Front Lines NI Alenline 0 T This Week Yom HaShoah: A Special Ritual You Don't Say really good writer can scare you, make you laugh or weep or enthrall you with a beautiful description. Such people know, enjoy and employ words to their advantage. We all should-develop an appreciation for language. Perhaps then we can help elimi- nate such poignant descriptive words as "thingy" or the prolif- eration of "like" merely by using a well constructed metaphor. One of my favorite pastimes is to find clever turns of phrase that employ plays on words, known as puns. Here then, are some of my latest discoveries by people who also love to play with words. (Many thanks to loyal readers who have sent these in). • Those who jump off a bridge in Paris are in Seine. • A backward poet writes inverse. • A man's home is his castle, in a manor of speaking. • Shotgun wedding: a case of wife or death. •A hangover is the wrath of grapes. • Does the name Pavlov ring a bell? • Reading while sun- bathing makes you well red. • When two egotists meet, it's an I for an I. • A bicycle can't stand on its own because it's two tired. •A will is a dead give- away. • In a democracy, your vote counts. In feudalism, your count votes. • A chicken crossing the road is poultry in motion. • If you don't pay the exorcist, you get repossessed. • When a clock is hungry, it goes back four seconds. •You feel stuck with debt if you can't budge it. • Local Area Network in Australia: LAN down under. • A lot of money is tainted: It taint yours and it taint mine. • A boiled egg in the morning is hard to beat. • He had a photographic memory that was never developed. • Those who get to big for their britches will be exposed in the end. • Once you have seen one shopping center, you've seen a mall. • Bakers trade bread recipes on a knead- to-know basis. • Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana. • The man who fell into the upholstery machine is fully recovered. • He often broke into song because he couldn't find the key. e Every calendar's days are num- bered. • Accupuncture is a jab well done. A group of, chess enthusiasts attended a convention at a large hotel. In between sessions they gathered in the lobby and loudly discussed their achievements. The manager finally dispersed the crowd because no one liked chess nuts boasting in an open foyer. 111 Gas Pump Blues With gas prices climbing above $3 a gallon, it's painful to pull in for a fill-up. And there seems to be no end in sight. What's an economically depressed Michigan population to do? For a future story, we're interested in knowing how gas prices have affected you personally. Are you driving less and carpooling more? Will you head out on the highway for a summer vacation? Have you traded in your gas-guzzling SUV for a more fuel-efficient model? She will create a cookbook that honors the memories of survivors and also raises money to feed hun- gry people in Israel. Each recipe will be accom- panied by a brief story explaining how the indi- vidual managed to survive the Holocaust. "We have stories of the Kinder Transport, children hidden in convents, Christian families hiding Jewish fami- lies and even those who sur- vived concentration camps," Caras said. "Each story is heartwarming and inspira- tional." Recipes will include soups, appetizers, main dishes, side dishes and desserts. By put- ting them together with the survivor stories, Caras hopes these important stories will not be lost. "The idea is that when the cook serves the dish to her family she will also read the story of the survivor. That way we will keep the memories of these brave Jewish people alive for generations to come." Proceeds from the Survivor Cookbook will benefit the Carmei Ha'Tir Soup Kitchen in Jerusalem. Learn more about the soup kitchen at www.survivorcookbook.org . Cookbooks will be sold by synagogues and Jewish groups throughout the nation. If you know of a survivor and would like to honor them, send their story and recipe to: Survivor Cookbook, P.O. Box 230, Clarksville, MD 21029, e-mail to survivorcookbook@ aol.com or call Joanne Caras at (443) 604-2643. - Keri Guten Cohen, Metro Detroiter Rachel Kapen tells the story of how two candles help her mark Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day.
