Italian Grill

Amir Gutfreund, born in Haifa long
after the Holocaust, looks back through
his first novel, Our Holocaust (Toby
Press; $24.95). Set along an imaginary
street in suburban Haifa, the book fol-
lows a group of Holocaust survivors
intent on remaining silent about their
darkest experiences ' .
Two neighborhoocrchildren, wanting
to learn about the backgrounds of these
people, are at the center of the plot,
which takes unexpected turns:

Irene Nemirovsky, killed in
Auschwitz, wrote novellas in a notebook
preserved by her daughter. That writ-
ing about the urban effects of war is
published in Suite Francaise (Knopf;
$25).
Both stories take place between the
time German forces prepare to enter
Frante and the time some leave for the
invasion of the Soviet Union. The sto-
rylines show the panic experienced as
Parisians try to escape.

Voices of a Vanished World, a choral work by-Marjan Helms, has its
world premiere 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 10, at the Wharton Center for
the Performing Arts in East Lansing. Commissioned by the Michigan State
University Children's Choirs, the piece explores the emotional and spiritual
experiences of children in the Holocaust.
As a counterpoint to the musical narrative, the work incorporates a multi-
media presentation of archival images representing European Jewish culture
before and during World War
Mary Alice Stollak; director of the choir, is working with a composition for
treble voices and chamber ensemble.
