Idina Menzel as a Jewish character.
Dust is set in 1930s Los Angeles, but
unlike Chinatown, it garnered mixed
reviews. Still, Dust,
like Towne's other
relative failures, has
much to recommend
it.
Perhaps it is the
semi-autobiographi-
cal nature of Dust
Robert Towne
that got Towne to talk
about being Jewish in several recent
interviews.
He said this of his experience as a
Jew in World War II Los Angeles: "The
prejudice I saw as a child during the
war — one of the things you'd hear
is,`That goddamn Roosevelt is a Jew
lover! Then seeing Mexican kids get-
ting beaten up at grammar school just
because they were Mexican. It's not
hard to make the connection between
the two and know that both were
unfair. So in that sense, [Dust] was
very personal!'

Gwyneth Paltrow gave birth to
her second child, a son she named
Moses, on April 9. Paltrow's father.,
(the late director Bruce Paltrow)
was Jewish and Gwyneth was raised
Jewish, but her new son's name may
not be a salute to her Jewish back-
ground.
Her husband, Coldplay rocker Chris
Martin, who isn't Jewish, wrote a song
about Paltrow in 2003 called "Moses!'
The first stanza compares her effect
on him to the parting of the Red Sea.
I don't know
whether Martin
called the song
"Moses" because
of Paltrow's Jewish
background, but
clearly the name
Moses came to
mean a lot to the
couple. El

Testimonial:
"Royal Catering presented us with an 'assortment of mouth-
watering menu selections to choose from. Close attention was paid to every
detail involved with home catering and our specific needs (for a kosher
family and friends' pre-wedding party).
Jeff and the Royal Catering staff were professional and stress-free to work
with. We were so pleased with the success of our party - we hired him to do
one two weeks later."
