working with the Israelis to help
the Michigan economy. "Following
our trip [to Israel], Sen. Jacobs and
I were excited about the economic
opportunities in Israel;' he said.
Jacobs also recognized the need
to reach out to Israeli economic
partners. "Michigan is one of the
few states that doesn't have an
economic representative in Israel,''
she said. "Having Michigan repre-
sentation in Israel is essential in
transforming Michigan's economy
from a manufacturing to a high-
tech economy.
Chief Jones closed the evening
forum by re-emphasizing the
need for the United States to learn
from Israel. "As we look toward
our future, it's guaranteed Israel
will be in the forefront waiting to
help us. When I look at the word
`Jerusalem, I see the letters U.S.A.
right in the middle of it."
Jennifer Bloom of West
Bloomfield, an MSU junior who
helped organize the day's events,
said it was important for her to
create a program that promotes
Israel's expertise and actions in a
non-political way. Cindy Hughey,
executive director of MSU Hillel,
was excited that students were
heavily involved with the planning
and execution of the event.
"Our students were proud to be
part of an event that has the poten-
tial for creating a dynamic partner-
ship between the state of Michigan
and Israel"
