Testimonial: "Royal Catering presented us with an assortment of mouth-
watering menu selections to choose from. Close attention was paid to every
detail involved with home catering and our specific needs (for a kosher
family and friends' pre-wedding party).
Jeff and the Royal Catering staff were professional and stress-free to work
with. We were so pleased with the success of our party - we hired him to do
one two weeks later."

Picture Perfect

CCS photography chair picks winners.

Suzanne Chessler
Special to the Jewish News

V !ewers of "EXPOSURES:
Photo. graphy '06," the exhibit
running through April 28 at
Ferndale's Lawrence Street Gallery, are
seeing images reviewed by Bruce Feld-
man, photography chair at Detroit's
College for Creative Studies.
Feldman, on the Sunday before the
show filled the gallery, judged more
than 50 pictures into the exhibit and
decided which would win prizes. Best
of the Show, with an award of $150,
went to Krysti Spence, who entered a
black-and-white photo titled Jellyfish.
First place in the Color category, with
a prize of $50, went to Lisa Tackier
Glazer, who entered Girl With Doll.
Glazer, who lives in West Bloomfield
and is active with the nearby Bais
Chabad, took the picture in Poland,
where she traveled to mark the 60th
anniversary of the March of the
Living. Girl With Doll captures part
of a photographic memorial honoring
children killed during the Holocaust.
Glazer's second entry, Sisters, reflects
another segment of the same memo-
rial.
.
While Spence's picture provides a
somewhat ambiguous view, Glazer's
picture is more clear-cut. Seen togeth-
er, the entries suggest the wide spec-
trum of approaches offered through
this exhibit, which includes some
abstractions and digital alterations.
"I looked for craft, content and an
ability to communicate to the viewer,"
says Feldman, 49, who moved to
.Michigan two years ago to join the
CCS faculty. "I try to evaluate each
work as its own piece. When I have a
series to judge, I look for consistency
of vision!'

Feldman, who worked on special
projects for CCS before joining the
faculty, created a five-year plan for its
photo studies program. He teaches
advanced digital media and likes get-
ting to know the students, particularly
freshmen.
The Lawrence Street juror holds
a bachelor's degree in photography
from the Art Center College of Design
in Pasadena, Calif., and did gradu-
ate work in fine art at the Maryland
Institute College of Art. Feldman, who
also studied film and special effects at
California State University, traces his
early interest in photography to his
dad, a camera hobbyist with Jewish
heritage.
"I've never used a set style for my
own images," Feldman explains. "If
I keep doing the same work, I feel I
haven't progressed. I am interested in
everyday scenes and believe that these
images can be as important as the
ones that are unusual."
Feldman has changed careers more
than once and has been a medical
researcher, graphic designer and fabric
designer before settling into artistic
photographer. He has experimented
with combining still life and motion
into a single image with an audio
component, and his work has been
shown at the Santa Barbara Museum
of Art.
