Israeli Scholar Shabbaton
For almost three years, Sharon and
Jerry Knoppow and their daughter
and son-in-law, Susan Knoppow
and David
Saperstein,
have been part
of a monthly
study group on
Jewish philos-
ophy taught by
Israeli scholar
Zohar Raviv, a
doctoral can-
didate at the
Zohar Raviv
Frankel Center
for Judaic
Studies at the University of Michigan.
When they realized Raviv would
be leaving this summer, they decided
to organize a "grand finale" week-
end of learning at their synagogue,
Congregation Shaarey Zedek B'nai
Israel Center in West Bloomfield.
They raised money, then
approached their rabbis to secure
a Learning Shabbaton April 21-22.
Study group member Nancy Kaplan
arranged for Congregation B'nai
Moshe's Kolel Moshe Institute for
Lifelong Jewish Learning to co-host
two lectures April 23.
The collaboration yielded four lec-
tures on "One God, Many Voices." On
Friday, April 21, at B'nai Israel, Raviv
will discuss "The Evolving One," fol-
lowing a 6 p.m. dinner (adults, $15,
children, $8). No lecture charge. On
Shabbat morning, Raviv will lecture
on "The Many Mirrors of God" after
kiddush lunch, which is free, but
RSVPs are requested.
At B'nai Moshe in West Bloomfield,
Raviv will speak at 4 p.m. Sunday,
April 23, on "Philosophy, TheolOgy
and Religion: Interfaith Relations for
the Post-Modern Age." Tuition is $10
at the door. After minyan at 6 p.m. and
a light Israeli vegetarian meal (adults,
$10, children, $5), Raviv will speak at
7:30 p.m. on "Embracing Auschwitz:
The Perils of Our Holocaust
Narratives," co-sponsored by Hidden
Children/Child Survivors of Michigan
and the Holocaust Education
Coalition.
Prepaid reservations are necessary
for meals and to secure babysit-
ting. Call Gail at B'nai Israel, (248)
357-5544. At B'nai Moshe, call
Nancy Kaplan, (248) 737-1931 or
e-mail kolelmoshe@comcast.net .
Reservations due by April 18.
