The Walled Lake Northern High junior won the 100-yard breaststroke in a personal- best and school-record 59.36 seconds. Thanks to the victory, Sandler became the 4-year-old school's first state cham- pion in any sport. He's also the first swimmer from a Walled Lake high school to win a state swimming title. But Sandler didn't feel like doing cartwheels after the monumental race. "Even though Roman had the swim of his life, he didn't celebrate Northern coach Michelle Caie-Brandon said. "He was very humble." . That's because Sandler actually finished second. He was awarded first place after. winner Jason Lintjer of South Haven was disqualified for doing a dolphin kick on a turn. The kick is allowed in the Olympics, col- lege and club swimming, but not in high school competition. "I felt really bad for Jason because he's a friend I met through swim- ming," Sandler said. "He told me before the race that he Was going to do a dolphin kick so he could set a state record, and I told him not to do it. I would have swum at least a second .faster if I would have done that kick?' Lintjer swam 57.38 in the pre- lims, just .24 off the state record of 57:14 set in 2004 by Grant Burtch of Holland. Sandler's time in the prelims was 59.33. Sandler could relate to Lintjer's'pain because he was disqualified for doing the same kick at the Western Lakes Activities Association meet, wiping out a victory. The only difference is Sandler didn't do the kick on purpose. "Roman and I felt terrible after he was disqualified at the league meet;' Caie-Brandon said. "But ultimately, what happened helped him win a state championship?' Sandler also was 11th in the 200* IM in 1:57.82 at the state meet, help- ing Northern finish 18th in the team standings. This wasn't the first time that Sandler was involved in a state championship. He was an important member of Birmingham Groves' 2004 Division 2 state champion team when he was a freshman. Sandler started swimming for Northern as a sophomore after his family moved to Commerce Township. A year-round swimmer since he was 9, Sandler is a member of the Livonia-based Bulldogs Aquatic Club. He's also is a tri-athlete, competing in that sport during the summer months. "Roman is a successful swimmer not only because of his talent and competitive drive, but his knowledge;' Caie-Brandon said. "He understands the physics of the sport. He knows not only how to move his body in the water, but why." . April Madness The Gorosh Family AZA basketball playoffs are underway. The champion will be crowned at noon Sunday at the Jewish CoMmunity Center in West Bloomfield. Semifinals will be played at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. The six-team field includes two squads from Shapiro along with Greenberg, Herzl, Jolson and Rabin. Adam Izer Adam Horwitz pitched the West Bloomfield Jewish Academy baseball team to a pair of Catholic League C-D Division victories. He fanned 10 in a 5-1 win over Warren Immaculate Conception and he threw a complete game in a 5-2 triumph over Marine City Cardinal Mooney. The Jewish Academy girls soccer team lost 4-0 to Royal Oak Shrine. Jewish Academy boys basketball star Levi Stewart was named to the Class D All-State sixth team by the - Detroit News. ❑ Send your sports news to sports@thejewishnews.com .
