nswer: Dear Miriam,
There are many varieties
of tea and nearly as many
claimed health benefits. Health
claims range from boosting your
immunological system to protect-
ing your skin against the sun to
reducing the risk of various types
of cancer to promoting a healthy
heart. Next to water, tea is the most
widely consumed beverage in the
world.

Barb, y
grandmother
drank her tea
regularly and
lived into her
90s. I drink a lot of coffee, but I'm
interested in knowing the benefits
of drinking tea. Thanks, Miriam.

Somewhat paradoxically,
a University of Cambridge
School of Medicine study
concluded that drinking
tea may guard against
osteoporosis, while
heavy caffeine intake
has been linked with
reduced bone density in
I other studies. A word of
/ caution on caffeine: you
may want to consider
replacing some of your
coffee intake with tea, not
just adding to it.

Researchers are not yet certain
how tea works, but suspect anti-
oxidants in tea (called poly-phe-
nols) may play an important role.
Polyphenols may be substantially
(perhaps 100 times) more effective
than Vitamin C in fighting free
radicals that can damage cells. To
be continued next time ...
