raig Taubman perpetu-
ally looks for new ways to
celebrate holidays through
music, and his latest project is The
Passover Lounge, a recording that takes
traditional songs and plays them in
very contemporary styles.
"Dayenu,""Chad Gadya" and "Ma
Nishtanah" sound very different on the
CD that mixes tradition with laid-back
grooves and ethereal vocals.
Todd Herzog and Erin Tozour join
Taubman to sing the selections that
are among the releases of Craig 'n
Co, Taubman's venture into produc-
ing recordings. Chris Hardin is on
keyboard and is accompanied by
melodica, sax, duduk, clarinet, cello,
guitar, strings and percussions for ful-
some sounds in
the latest edition of Taubman's
Celebrate Series available through
www.celebrateseries.com .
Max Helfman (1901 1963)
expressed his feelings by composing
and directing music, and the Milken
Archive of American Jewish Music
has released the world premiere
recording of Di Naye Hagode (The
New Haggadah), the composer's 1948
choral tone poem capturing the emo-
tions experienced during and after the
Warsaw Ghetto Uprising of 1943. The
events in Poland came at the time of
Passover, and the uprising is related to
the story that is the basis for holiday
observances.
The CD, on Naxos American
Classics, www.naxos.com, includes
two other Helfman compositions: Hag
Habikkurim, a pageant for Shavuot,
and The Holy Ark, a Torah service.
Di Naye Hagode, narrated by
Theodore Bikel and conducted by Nick
Strimple, is based on the epic Yiddish
poem "The Shadows of the Warsaw
Ghetto" by Itzik Fefer, who was himself
murdered in Stalin's postwar terror
against Soviet Jews.
The message of the recording,
scored in Yiddish, is the emphasis
on Jewish de- termination to resist
and remember forever. The piece is
enhanced with performances by the
Choral Society of Southern California,
Los Angeles Zimriyah Chorale and the
Young Musician's Foundation Debut
Orchestra. ❑
