AJ Committee Tribute
Michigan native Daniel L. Doctoroff,
deputy mayor for economic devel-
opment and rebuilding for the city
of New York, will be the featured
speaker for the American Jewish
Committee Metropolitan Detroit
Chapter's tribute dinner honoring
Michael E. Duggan, president and
CEO of Detroit Medical Center.
The dinner will be 6 p.m.
Thursday, April 27, at the Detroit
School of Arts. Dugganwill receive
the AJC's Institute of Human
Relations Distinguished Leadership
Award.
Doctoroff is spearheading a mas-
sive effort to reverse New York's fis-
cal crisis, after the attacks of 9-11,
through a five-borough economic
development strategy.
The evening's tribute co-chairs
are Judge Edward Ewell Jr., Yousif
Shafari, Florine Mark, Frank Stella
and Gary Torgow. AJC tribute chair is

Preparing For Passover
Yad Ezra and the Moies Chetim
Organization of Detroit are joining
in a campaign to distribute Passover
food packages to more than 1,150
needy Jewish families in the corn-
munity. Every family will receive a
package containing chicken, matzah,
soup mix, grape juice, gefilte fish,
. eggs, horseradish, coffee cake mix,
matzah meal, macaroons, produce
and other items specifically for use
on the holiday.
The distribution on April 2-3 was
handled by a corps of 60 volunteers
directed by Yad Ezra staff members
Elaine Ryke, Bernie Phillips and
Linda Chordash.
Yad Ezra is the Berkley-based
kosher food bank. The Yad Ezra/
Moies Chetim Passover Appeal
enabled the food pantry to distribute
almost 46,000 pounds of food for
this effort.

Shir Tikvah Scholar
Congregation Shir Tikvah in Troy
will present a scholar in residence
program from Friday, April 28- -
Sunday, April 30, featuring Rabbi Eli
Cohen of Santa Cruz, Calif.
The event will kick off with a
Kabbalat Shabbat service at 7:15
p.m. led by Rabbis Arnie Sleutelberg
and Aaron Starr. Rabbi Cohen's topic
will•be "Number Your Days That You
May Attain a Heart of Wisdom: A
Look At the Omer."
Rabbi Cohen will lead a Saturday

service beginning at 10 a.m. with a
lunch and learn to follow.
On Saturday, he will lead the con-
gregation seudah shlishit (third
meal of the Sabbath) at 6:15 p.m.
From 7:30-8:30 p.m. Rabbi Cohen
will discuss "Why Be Jewish: Reb
Eli's Answer for the 21st Century."
A discussion will follow as well as
a Havdalah service and a social-
musical gathering.
The final presentation, on Sunday,
will be a discussion on "Modern-Day
Jewish Mysticism", a follow-up to an
introduction to Kaballah program
beginning at 10 a.m.

The Henry & Delia Meyers Library
welcomes authors Bill Broder and
Gloria Killian Broder, both native
Detroiters, who will speak about
their newly released books on
Sunday, April 2'3, at
2 p.m.
Bill Broder is the
author of Taking
Care of Cleo, a corn-
ing-of-age story
that ties together
Jewish themes,
the challenge of
Gloria Kurian
dealing with an
Broder -
autistic sibling and
Prohibition-era
bootleggers, all set
in Charlevoix dur-
ing the 1920s.
Gloria Kurian
Broder's book,
Their Magician and
Other Stories, was
recently among the
Bill Broder
nominees for the
Northern California
Book Award. In this collection, she
presents characters who in the face
of loss, loneliness, self-doubt and
other challenges strive to keep alive
the spirit within them.
Books will be available for pur-
