or L'Dor, a klezmer band
based in Tennessee, invites
everybody to get into the
act. Musicians hand out kazoos to the
audience and expect spectators to play
right along and join the fun seen on
stage.
The actual kazoo-filled numbers
come as a surprise. They are not listed
in the program handed out by the
10-member group of Jewish and non-
Jewish instrumentalists, whose mix of
traditional klezmer tunes and adapted
klezmer numbers is an unexpected
pleasure for those unfamiliar with the
group.
When Dor L'Dor opens its show 7:30
p.m. Sunday, April 2, at the Ark in Ann
Arbor, the audience can anticipate
hearing the University of Michigan
fight song in klezmer. It will be part of
the energy generated by band found-
ers Ken and Susan Shorr Brown, who
celebrate Jewish folk and dance beats.
"Susan really enjoys taking
well-known pieces and klezmerizing
them," says Ken Brown, a lawyer who
moved from saxophone to clarinet as
he played through high school and
college. "She's done that with 'This
Land
Is Your Land; `Stars and Stripes
Forever' and 'Bay Mir Bistu Sheyn:

"She really loves Mitch Albom's
book The Five People You Meet
in Heaven and developed a piece,
The Five Pieces You Meet in
Heaven, as a takeoff from that idea.
The arrangement includes 'Fanfare
for the Common Man, `Simple Gifts,
`Shalom Haverim: ( 76 Trombones'
and `L'Chayini!"
Dor L'Dor, Hebrew for "genera-
tion to generation:' was chosen as the
band's name to describe the original
makeup of the group and the growing
repertoire, from "Hine Ma Tov"to
"Scarborough Fair."
Ken and Susan Brown, who started
Dor L'Dor in 1999, included their
three children with the idea of,passing
along their love of music to the next
generation of their own family. They
started out playing at simchas of their
extended family and friends, and the
response encouraged them to do more
with their talents.
As they came to appear in about
12 formal shows each year, additional
members were added.
"We like to perform pieces from
our CD, Dance for Your Life, as we
expand with each appearance , ) ' Brown
says. "We find it all very exciting!'
